Bob Loveless passed away today

I sit here with tears streaming down my face, not much for myself, but for all the good things that Bob ever did for people, and how much he touched their lives with generosity, honesty and enthusiasm.

When Dave Ellis made the OP, I had to call up Phil Lobred and make sure he knew....and gave him the sad news.....that hurt a lot.

The first time I ever met Bob, he was the prototypical crusty SOB, growling that growl of his at a friend of mine and I.....but once he settled down, he was somewhat pleasant.

The fourth and last time I met R.W. Loveless was at the AKI in 2005. I was wearing a nice suit for the occasion, and he motioned me over, and coon fingered the jacket.....then he whispered in my ear that it had been a long time since he saw anyone with some STYLE(emphasis his)....Bob spent 1/2 that day talking with me about his history with Gerber, and answering any question that I had....it was a fine gift of his time, one that can never be repaid.

Condolences to his family, to us he was "just" a legend, but to you he was husband, father and Granpa....he will be sorely missed by all.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I met Bob at the NYCKS in 1988, I believe. Maybe it was 1989. At that time my company was called "Martinsite Knives", a play on my last name and the metallurgical term Martensite. I thought it was quite clever. No one else noticed.

Bob stopped at my table, picked up my business card, and chuckled. He had immediately picked up on my play on words, and commented that he thought that was a great name for a company. I thought that was kind of neat.

I will have to pull my dog eared, yellowed copy of his book "How to Make Knives" off the shelf and read it for the 1000th time. When I first read that book, it lit a fire in me that is (thankfully) still burning after 35 years.

Thanks, Bob.

Thanks to everyone who has posted about my father Bob Loveless and his passing. yes, the knife world has lost a legend, and his three daughters and grandchildren have lost a loving father and grandfather. He had a heart of pure gold, and God will enjoy my father's company and wicked sense of humor! We loved him very very much. Alison Loveless Aleman (oldest daughter).

Alison,

The knife world thanks your family for sharing your father with us all these years.

I will keep your family in my prayers as you go through this tough time.

Take care

Charles

very poignant Steven.

Thanks to all of you at BladeForums for honoring and remebering my wonderful father Bob Loveless, and for sharing your thoughts and condolences with and for my family. I always knew my dad was rated Number One in the field of knifemaking, but of course that is just a daughter's prejudice! But after reading all the accolades about him and his knives, it just reaffirms by beliefs. Yes, my dad was in fact a great knifemaker, but even more than that he was a great father and grandfather, and that was not a part of him the public generally knew about. He lived a long and satisfying life and died peacefully in his own bed at home on Sept. 2, 2010. Prior to his dying, his daughters and grandchildren were all able to see him, all at different times, and we were able let him know just how much he was loved and appreciated. Again thank you members of BladeForums for your kind words. Robin (Loveless) Askew, the middle daughter.

"To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die."

Papa I miss you. . .

Alison and Robin,

Welcome to Bladeforums, my prayers go out you and your familes.

R I P - Bob, Thanks for all the memories.
