My neighbor caught a Bobcat behind my house today in a cage. Something has been killing a lot of the livestock around here (chickens and stuff) and he brought it to my house and showed it to me. I know there dangerous but, he was so pretty, but wild. He had the deepest low growl i have ever heard. I could tell he was scared to death. I have lived on this land all of my life and I have seen them in the wild but when I do, they usually just take off. Im telling you there more scared of us than we are them. That thing was pretty big to be a bobcat. I just could not believe how pretty he was. I think he let him go. I hope so anyway. That sounds crazy huh? I just could not imagine something so beautiful being put to death. That was one pretty cat. My daughter and wife came outside to look at it and was amazed at it. They have never seen anything like that before around here. My dad and I have always told them there were Bobcats here and Cougers but now they believe me. I just love Wild life and seeing one up so close had a special meaning to me.

I love bobcats. I have seen three up close in my lifetime. I would love to care for one, but as we all know that aint a good idea.

Y'know, in all my years I have yet to see a bobcat in the wild. Sadly, an old rancher friend of mine came to me all proud about fifteen years ago, and told me he bagged two bobcats with his bow out on his ranch. I was completely disheartened. What made it worse is he seemed so proud when waving the pictures of their limp bodies in my face. I don't think Alan (my friend) even raised animals small enough to be taken by a bobcat, he was a cattle rancher. He had two cocker spaniels he said were always being harrassed by "bobcats", and this was the excuse only after the kill. Sure, Alan, and I have a bridge to sell you. Alan died of liver failure only months later. Karma? RIP ya old bum, I miss ya, heh. :(

Concerning your neighbor, I too hope he set the cat free. They are wonderful animals, and they do not have the fortune of being able to multiply rapidly. Each one is worth a dozen in the distant future.

That would have been a great sight to see :)

I'm a BIG cat lover, mine is a PITA, but I love her. The house wouldn't be the same without a cat :o

I also hope your neighbor set the bobcat free, all of the big cat family seem to be dwindling :(

There's a local birds of prey rescue nearby and they have taken in a bobcat that was raised as someone's pet when it became too much of a handful. Unfortunately it had all of its claws removed (front and rear) and there's no way it could be released back into the wild. What are people thinking?

Anyway, they are indeed beautiful. Being on the rare side, hardly seen by people, makes it a real treat to get to see one up close.

I never understood why people do that. Not looking for a debate here, just a point of view if you have one. But even with deer, i mean i have no problem with hunting if your eating it. but to brag about killing the biggest deer just seems odd to me. Killing a bigger dear isn't really any harder or requiring more skill is it? Personally if requiring large food consumption is left out, I would rather just take smaller deer just to leave the genepool healthy. I guess i just find it disrespectful for exploitative to plaster pictures of dead animals everywhere. give em some respect, and dont you dare leave uneaten meat on your plate.

I've only ever seen a road killed bobcat. but can boast having seen a wolverine (and not knowing what the hell it was).

I used to be a bobcat. (Ohio University) :D

I've never seen one in the wild. I know they are around, but I haven't seen one.

There are a lot of exotic hybrids available as pets these days, and some of the bobcat mixes are very impressive looking. I'd still rather see one in the woods than own half of one in my house, though.

Yes trophy deer often takes more skill, little two points are newbies and easy victims. Seasoned veterans are difficult to outsmart and are more rare.

If you doubt me, go hunting with a camera in the off season. It won't be quite as hard in the off season because deer get jittery in hunting season (bullets whizzing by will do that to you). Unless you know what you are doing, getting a perfect photo (easier than a good rifle shot) will not be that easy.

I've never seen a bobcat in the wild either. I hope he let it go too.

I've seen one bobcat in the wild and in rather strange circumstances. I was on a week long bicycle ride across Missouri, early one morning while climbing a hill outside of small town in southern MO I rounded a bend and there was a good sized bobcat in the middle of the road. He couldn't have been more than 5ft from me and gave me a "deer in the headlights" look before he bounded off into the woods. I'm not sure which one of us was more surprised.

Huh? The mountain lion population is not only growing but they seem to expanding territory. USFWS appears to think that the bobcat population is growing as well.

Wish you would have taken a pic.

I've never seen one in the wild either. My wife has. I've heard many.

Ironically although I live in the country I've never seen or heard one here.

Where I grew up, Nitro WV a small town it backs up against a lot of open land. There were lots of bobcats there. When we had a drought a few years ago a co worker who lives up against the woods saw one drinking from the drip on her air conditioner in her back yard!

I too won't kill anything I wouldn't eat. I've seen several bobcats in the wild around where I live, always a nice experience. I've been a hunter my whole life, and I share the sense of disappointment when I see one of these animals killed. Zenheretic is correct about the skill required in harvesting a large buck. I know several deer hunters who pretty consistently bag large deer. They are the guys who really spend a lot of time afield, generally starting their scouting a couple of months in advance, most often hunting a particular animal. None of them are prone to bragging (or at least excessively :p ). Of course, sometimes less ardent hunters get lucky.

I would have liked to see a pic, I have no idea what a bobcat looks like! I'm going to google it now.

Here's a pic ... they are beautiful animals ....

Here, We hear them at night and just last summer I saw one 50 feet from my house while I was finishing my Coffee.
This one was bigger than my 45lb dog.

We even see them as road kill around here.

As road kill? That sucks....aren't they very smart?

I like all the big cats too from Bobcats on up. They have a purpose and a place in the food chain. Unless they are doing a lot of harm they really should be left alone.
