Bolt action .22

Papers ! I don,t need no stinking papers . L:O:L

Dang thats some nice shooting . When I first looked at it I thought it was all one group .

Hmmm . There is only one hope for me . How do you shoot when you are standing up instead of at a girly bench ? L:O:L

That just proves your rifle can shoot .

Runningboar . where do you live roughly ? Maybe we could shoot together .(asks he anxiously hoping its far far away .) (oops , did I type that?) L:O:L

Not as good as I do from a bench,:o but I usually have squirrel dumplings when ever I want. :D

It aught to with the work I put in to it, that is the problem with 10/22s they are just all right out of the box, it takes a little work to wring the good out of them.

Nylons and Marlin 60s are known to shoot out of the box. Here is a pic of the rifle that shot those groups, and the pup that trees the squirrels.

Okay, I can see you guys are wanting to put your dicks out on the picnic table ;) lol....and I'm still wondering why I got rid of the 10/22.

Kevin, it was a Cooey (spelling?) now that I recall. I understand the fingernail trick for looking at a bore. But I still couldn't figure out how to get the bolt out (I know how to do that with a Mauser or 303) and the guy that was selling couldn't figure it out either. It may have been a great little inexpensive shooter.

Meantime, I will look at the Marlin and CZs. I'm hoping to go cheap for this, but I've spent as much on an air rifle.

This summer I've been craving a bolt action .22 as a small game-getter. I found a 1950's Canadian long-barreled single shot at a yard sale, but passed on it because I couldn't figure out how to remove the bolt to inspect the bore. There was enough rust outside to suggest the bore might be bad.

I've seen what I recall as Remingtons or Winchesters that were used as military trainers, offered through the civilian marksmanship program.

Any recommendations on makes, models, years and prices?

I just bought a Mossberg 100ATR bolt action rifle chambered for the 30.06 round... Amazing rifle.

Squirrel dumplings . Thats just not fair . My buddy says fried squirrel is great . Unfortunately they are protected around here .

Son if that scope got any bigger it would be a telescope . What do you have to clean up to get one of those puppies to shoot straight ? Do you get fox squirrels around you ? Their skins are supposed to make good bow strings .

Another thing I like about the 66 is its almost an auto fire . Very little recoil allows multiple shots on the same target .

Squirrels protected ?!?!? Kevin, where do you live? Up here in northern New York, we call them tree rats. They get into transformers and cause power outages, they get into the house and eat wiring and cause fires. They run around in the walls and chew holes in the ceiling tiles...then you have to go at them with a shotgun. They hover around bird feeders and chew the bark on the tree supporting the feeder, effectively girdling it and eventually killing it. My dog hates them. In town they shoot them with air rifles or some other sound suppressed weapon.

I guess they're good to eat. Any recipes?

Last time I had one in my house, he ended up hiding under the bookcase in the living room. I couldn't get him out. The dog was going nuts. I called up the Department of Environmental Conservation and asked them for a recommendation for removal. They said to call up the state police. I called up the state police and told the lady trooper what was going on, she told me to call DEC. I told her I was going to shoot it, she said "No don't do that, you'll put a hole in your wall." I eventually ended up laying down sideways on my living room carpet with my Ruger Mark 1 and plugged the little bastard in the head. And no, I didn't eat him.

Coldwood depending where in northern New York you live I am proabably about 75 miles up the road in Montreal Quebec . It seems squirrels are protected everywhere though I suspect it doesn,t hold true in completely rural communities .

I have heard fried squirrel is great though runningboar has been punishing me with visions of squirrel dumplings for daring him to a shooting contest . L:O:L

Heck I wouldn,t mind getting whupped by him if there was a mess of dumplings as a consolation prize .

They are called tree rats here as well . While they are protected there is one out at the archery range that has chewed his last hole . L:O:L

Take your time buddy . A good 22 can last you all your life .

It is, if you know what you are doing, if you kill a big, old, boar fox squirrel and just clean it and fry it, it is like trying to eat a leather belt. I take old squirrels and cook them in a pressure cooker and then flour and fry, and it is very good and very tender. It is a shame they are protected where you live, squirrel hunting is one of my favorite things in life.

Son if that scope got any bigger it would be a telescope . What do you have to clean up to get one of those puppies to shoot straight?.

The scope is an antique, it is a weaver K10 C3, fixed 10 power with fine crosshairs. I take some flak for it and I could get a modern scope that is smaller, but it seems to fit me and my rifle like it was made for it.

As far as accurizing 10/22s there have been books written, if you change the barrel or rechamber the factory barrel, bed the barrel and or action, and lighten the trigger it makes a world of difference. That is the basics but there are tons of small things that will tighten groups even more.

Do you get fox squirrels around you ? Their skins are supposed to make good bow strings ..

Scads of them, the season opens on Oct 16, if you want a few skins I can send you some, I usually just throw them away. Chris

Kevin, I'm about 20 miles west of Plattsburgh, which is on Lake Champlain. Nice to know somebody else lives in the cool blue north.

runningboar, I remember Fayetteville. Back in the day I was stationed at Ft. Bragg. It was pretty much of an army town then, I surely hope it's gotten better.

If it has gotten better I would have hated to see it back then.:(

Get a CZ-452-2E ZKM- the trainer model. Five shot mag included, hand checkered wood stock (beech) with a schabel forend, sling studs and swivels, 10 rd mags available, nice iron sights and a grooved reciever. Only the pistol grip is checkered, but they shoot great, even standing, andcost less than or about $200 new. Has nice traditional lines.

Coldwood wait a minute . 20 miles west of plattsburg is not the great white north . Heck you guys practically have palm trees down there . L:O:L

I used to go to Plattsburg beach quite a bit and enjoy the Clinton County fair .

I used to visit some friends in the country north of you at thanksgiving . You guys have yours after ours so I end up having two thanksgivings . Hmmm maybe thats why I,m 255 pounds . L:O:L

Runningboar Fayettville sounds nice . I hear you guys have a longer deer hunting season with larger bag limits ?

A couple or a few rawhided fox-squirrel pelts would be great . I,ve never made a rawhide one which my buddy wants me to do before he shows me how to make one from horse hair . (Thats a toughy) Do you happen to know an easy way to tan them ?

Kevin, I have a plastic palm tree in my front yard. Just to remind myself that I could be living in Canada LOL.

I always tell my Canadian friends that they're always welcome to move down here. Those of you who choose to live north of the 45th parallel have only yourselves to blame ;). LOL There ain't no mountains or trees between you and the winds from the arctic circle, although I understand that may be changing soon. I hope you're on high ground.

Seriously, I've always enjoyed Montreal. Great restaurants on St. Denis Boulevard (easy to find for us Yanks) But I know there are many more great restaurants. One of the last great cities in the world where you can still find horsemeat on the menu. Is squirrel next?;)

mp510, thank you for the heads up on that model. That's just about what I was looking for. But now that I look at the rest of the CZs, I might want one of the higher end models. I don't know why. I just want one. It's not like I'm a serious squirrel shooter, but I may become one. "Honey, I have to take my $500 .22 out and shoot some tree rats for dinner. 'kay?" Life changes, life goes on ;)

500 bucks of rifle for a 1 dollar squirrel ? L:O:L

Not too crazy on horse meat . The burger tastes acid to me . The fillet mignon is pretty good .Besides I have friends with horses who object to such stuff .

St. Denis street has a few micro brewery places I have wanted to visit . There are also herbal shops not far that are great .
