Bolt action .22

No , no , no . Thats not fair . No more talk about nice rifles . Coldwood that sounds neat . Sounds like an all around gun .

Where do you go shoot down your way anyway ?

Kevin, I belong to the Siberian Rod & Gun Club, in Dannemora, about 7 miles away. The range is primitive but also fairly quiet (no pun intended). It's fun to go shoot by myself, nobody else around. No range officer. Honor system. Occasionally, they have trad archery shoots.

Back in the day when I first moved here (Saranac) in '85, I thought nothing about shooting in my backyard. Dannemora has a maximum security prison and I'm surrounded by homes owned by corrections officers. Deer and bear hunting are a big tradition here. Everybody would sight in rifles in their backyard. I had an old surplus 8mm that rocked the neighborhood. I don't do that anymore because I am only 1 mile from a school, so that should be obvious to figure out. State troopers would be all over me and I'd be spending the weekend at the barracks trying to explain myself.

I don't know what the corrections officers bring home to play with. I once heard somebody up the road rip off a couple of clips from a fully automatic rifle. I wanted to go see, for fun and curiousity, but I thought he might get edgy if a stranger showed up.

Still, around here come hunting season, the hills are alive with the sound of gunfire.

But otherwise I go shoot at the Siberian range.

Kevin, when I said shooting in my backyard, I literally meant my backyard. I can still go up the hill and hunt on my property with no problem...the woods muffle the sound and don't get the schoolteachers too excited.

Went shooting today, thought I would take a picture for ya. My vote for the bolt action you should get CZ 452.Patrick

Nice- looks like you have a Lux (Walnut). I used see-thru rings, and have use of my sights, and the scope.

Beautiful rifle! Someone mentioned the Thompson Center 22 auto. They really are nice little 22 rifles and typically have nice walnut stocks!! Every time I look at one, I want to buy it.... I like 22's. It's a semi-auto though.

Kevin,
Im just getting back to this thread. You are correct, with semis you have to make sure the stuff will cycle reliably. In my 10/22 I even use Subsonics, every once in great while it may not come far enough back to eject/recock.
So, if it was for hunting, I'd say skip them, unless you have done sufficient testing.

The Winchester T-22s always cycle in the 10/22 , 100% of the time.

As you probably know, it's an issue on a rifle-by-rifle basis.
I have seen two identical semis using the same ammo, and one cycles reliably the other doesn't.

I'd tell anyone to spend the few bucks on a box of 50 Winchester T22s.
It was about 10 years ago, my gunstore owner told me they were the only ones he used, personally, despite the fact he sold Eley, CCi, Remington and Federal 22lr. From then forward, I was hooked.

Whatever .22lr ammo, Buy a box, make sure you have the lot#. If they perform well, then buy a few bricks with the same lot number.

CCIs are good rounds, reliable, and I'm certainly not talking them down.
CCI makes a subsonic, as well.
And CCI has the cool re-usable plastic trays! I usually fill them with T22s when I find empties. :)

It's just the standard model(trainer?).
Shoots great and the bolt smooths out nicely after a little use.

I also use subsonics for hunting after I enlarge the hollow point with a Paco Tool. The CZ has a long barrel and the subsonics are much quieter than the high speed loads.

The cool thing I have discovered is that with a 50 yard zero with the subsonic load, if I switch to Remington bulk pack hi-speed loads the rifle is also zeroed at 100 yards:) . This comes in handy where I hunt, which has a lot of wide open areas. Patrick

Spinnerblade what does modifying the hollow point accomplish . If you didn,t modify that would you still have your zero the same place ?

Do you think that your ammo change zero trick would transpose itself onto other 22 rifles ?

The subsonic ammo I use is the PMC Moderator, and the hollow point is very small, enlarging the hp with the Paco Tool makes a big difference in quickly killing large jack rabbits, cottontails I usually head shoot, so it's not as noticeable.

There's not much difference in zero between the modified and factory ammo.

I think the "ammo trick" would probably work with other rifles, but the exact ranges the two zeros happen could be a little different, of course the rifle would have to function with the subsonic ammo, my 10-22 didn't like the PMC.

You would most likely have to try it out for yourself and see what happens.

Your welcome for the excuse to head out to the range with your .22 :D .Patrick

You know when you talked about that tool I thought you were using an ordinairy tool that had another purpose . Thats a pretty neat little number .

I,ve only seen two or three rabbits around here . Tiny cottontails that are barely a mouthful .

Spinner-
Your stock looks beautiful for a trainer. Mine is VERY dark, and the grain is a lot less dense. Should have noticed the phosphate reciever.
