Does anyone else think a surplus ambulance would make a fantastic camp vehicle?

There is a guy on Instagram, I think his name is "bornforadventure" or something like that. He turned a K-10 into a "campulance" it's pretty badass.

Bladite couldn't handle my signature. So here we are.

I was referred to a government surplus auction website earlier... It's probably a good thing I don't have my check or I would have a new vehicle right now. 1997 International 4600 with a 7.6l turbo diesel ambulance.

There aren't too many 4wd ambulances though I'm finding out, which sucks, that would make it THE most epic camp vehicle.

The only negative with using an ambulance is that by the time they are ready for surplus sales, they are pretty much worn out. And the springs SUCK on an ambulance - big heavy box with lots of equipment overloading the springs. They ride like an old-timey no springs include horse drawn buckboard wagon.

Which is why I was thinking find a 4wd one, and upgrade the suspension, gut the crap I don't need and load it with stuff I want. Mind you, pipe dreams. Haven't slept in 2 days, haven't been paid in 3 months, but disarrono and vodka makes a helluva combination!

You should come visit. I got a few things that would make you sleep juuuuuust right :D

Id like this :D

Very cool setup, but the top speed in those trucks is pretty low, as I understand it. The axles have very low gearing and I don't know if anyone makes different ratio sets for those axles.

Where would you go in a hurry in a rig like that??

Anywhere you damn well please, obviously :D

I suppose you could make up for a lack of top speed by just traveling as the crow flies. :D

Actually though it's surprising and a little unnerving how many people value the ability of a rig to travel at 70 or 80 or even 90 down the freeway while pulling a load. Personally I'm OK only doing 50-60 with a trailer but I'm not towing my rock buggy across two states for a weekend wheeling trip either.

It would be slow going until i got to where i wanted to set up shop. Then id drop the back vehicle and tear up EVERYTHING!!

:D

I used to have a friend who had an old hearse to go (mountain biking with and) camping in. And, no, they did not sleep in coffins. Those things have a lot of room in the back! Plus it was just cool.
