Example: Civivi Elementum, regular model.

It is a good looking knife but still... it's just boring.

It's like "that guy" at the office, always wearing polo shirt or sweater, only talking about job. He doesn't smoke, drink and doesn't even come to team building or Christmas party. He never got in any trouble at work or school. He drives boring car and has no hobbies. Even if he has a pet - it's something like golden retriever. Nothing in his life is spicy - not even food. You get what I mean...

There are knives like that too. They are knives. They aren't bad. They work... but there's just nothing enticing about them.

Uhhh........Hello?
Are my ears ringing? Is someone talking about Me? Haha....... I base my whole design philosophy on making Basic, Plain, and Boring knives...... It's even in my title.
😂😂😂😂

Simple is Perfect.

I'm a Product Developer by trade. And let me tell you...... The easiest solution is always the hardest to find.

When people walk up and say ... "Well, yeah, That's obviously the right way, anybody can see that. Why didn't you just do it That way first....what took so long?. "
Haha
They never made anything, or came up with anything Originally...... It's hard.

Hopefully My knives aren't Too boring for ya?
(Thanks for the plug....btw🙂)

Great Thread!

Sorry for all the pics

I don't consider those boring knives Craig, they are your interpretation and imo not a direct copy as it seems the scandi "bushcraft" knives are. I also should have said that these "bushcraft" blades do work as long as they aren't too thick but still boring (to me). I don't find Kepharts and Nessmuks for example boring as I do like their basic shapes particularly the Nessmuk with is highly functional and at least you do see differing interpretations on the basic shape from different makers.

I'd have to disagree!! I think your blades look good....Your own style and signature shines thru while not having anyone design outright mimicking others!👍👍👍

Id take "plain" or "boring" as a compliment, since that means it'll probably work well.
I understand what you mean, but a knife is kinda representation of owner's personality. And I personally want to be proud of the knife I own.

Absolutely...... What Others might think of "Boring" I might think it looks Classy...... Timeless...... Tasteful........ Elegant.

*Exciting, might come across as Loud, Garish, Gaudy, Contrived, and Unnecessary.....?

It's Good that we have all these choices that we do. That's what makes this so great!
:D:D:D

Of cause. And just because something looks unconventional or new doesn't mean it cant also work well.

ALL the "bushcraft" blades!

For some a design is "boring/dull/plain" while others might see it as "clean" or "minimalist" or "understated." Most of what Ray Laconico makes "clean" designs, and I love the esthetic. And his style is pretty distinctive within the industry, despite not having any real signature feature (e.g., Chaves clip, Nadeau flipper tab) or more extroverted design (e.g., Tashi, Isham). Jesper Voxnaes is similarly "simple" yet distinctive.

The Elementum and the Bugout, which gets similar comments about looking "generic," look how they do because they are hewing close to what a lot of folks consider the archetypal knife design of the 20th century:

This is pretty much the definition of a "classic" knife design.

The thing I appreciate about clean/minimalist design is that you can dress it up with materials and finishes without it looking like you're trying too hard.

This one is just a clean, simple knife in a classic profile and finishes:

But if you feel the need to have a little more pizzazz, you can do it while still

If extroverted design is what you like, have at it; there's plenty of that available in the knife world. But there are plenty of "introvert" knives that most any knife collector would be proud to own (like the vintage Loveless I posted above, which goes for Rolex money).

I'm good with boring. Elaborate grinds and multi color anodizing isn't what I'm into. There are a bunch of knives out there that I think are pretty cool lookin', but I wouldn't carry them...
Ka-Bar TDI or Cold Steel Recon1 neither have really crazy grinds or anodizing, and will both work.

Even the ESEE Izula isn't really boring knife, yet it doesn't look crazy either.
