Born Again Maher & Grosh

Handled one at the Rendezvous, really a very nice knife, I would have bought one if had not already broke the bank at GEC.

Good to see another traditional style knife brand starting up. I don't know about going with Gen. Custer's knife though considering how things ended up for him.

The Maher & Grosh ad copy sometimes said so and so's "favorite knife". It might be following the ad copy for a particular knife but I don't recall it. Here's an example... "Chas Downing's Favorite".

I saw these at the show in Lexington at Ken Mundhenk's table. They are good examples of the high quality that Queen is capable of when they're on the ball. I liked the crescent pull and long pull used at the same time, especially on such a big folder. The ebony covers really worked for me too.

I didn't buy one because I told myself I wouldn't buy anything at the show. Of course that didn't happen and I bought my first GEC from Ken. I usually buy smaller slipjoints, so I walked away with a Tidioute #14 with red bone.

I'm looking forward to finding out what Ken and his partner do with the Maher & Grosh brand. Chas. Downing's favorite would be right up my alley actually.

I did a quick search and it is following old ad copy. There's some discussion of the knife on page 39 of Knives 2013.

The bail and odd (to me) combination of blades looks a little weird.--KV

I'm with you. Started with a nice frame, then a couple of odd and mismatched design choices (bail looks cheap, heavy-handed blade etch, wonky nail nicks and grinds) ruined it.

JMO of course.

Both the blade combination and the bail are accurate to the original knives. I like that! Check out one of the many reprints of the M&G catalogs.

I handled one at the Rendezvous. Queen did a decent job of it, keeping it to the early details. If they do their smaller models as well, I will buy some!
I saw Ken and Roger talking to Bill! I know they took the trouble and expense of securing the Trademark.
I wonder if GEC will do some future M&Gs??
:D

It's an interesting and welcome development.

I'm with Charlie, I'd like to see some smaller patterns. These two may have ignited Custer...but they're too behemoth for my taste or carry. Why call one Stagbone when it is obviously jigged bone (and not very exciting type either) ? I assume it's for verisimilitude as it is supposed to be a copy of Custer's knife and catalogues then likely dubbed stuff Stagbone even if it didn't try to look like stag.

I look forward to further releases.

I wonder if it's as simple as Queen's maybe sticking with a name assigned to the cover pieces by its bone supplier? Although with the purported connection to Custer, one of course hopes for something more historically substantial.

Or straightforward Hyperbole. :D

If there's a true Custer connection here in appointments and/or nomenclature, I look forward to hearing what others discover.

I expect verisimilitude is right Will,as Roger and Ken are trying as closely as possible copy Maher and Grosh. Roger has probably the best collection of old Maher and Grosh knives in the country, many are etched.

I know I'd like to have his etched Maher and Grosh farmers jack.

Good to hear, Lyle. Thanks!

I do like Queen Cutlery/ Schatt and Morgan knives and I have many, but what's putting me of at the moment is the blade sharpening. It's awful, the knives I have seen lately is like a bad sea crossing on Cape Horn. I like the look of the Maher and Grosh offerings but with my previous statement and the cost is not worth buying, sad to say.

Right on. It's an authentic traditional, not a modern interpretation. I like the nail nicks. I have a Case-Bose Yukon with that configuration, it's neat and useful.

Rusty1, so you've seen these knives and they had a poor grind?

Couldn't have said it better. 👍👍

This may have been discussed elsewhere, but how exactly does all this work. Is Maher and Grosh just like an office somewhere? I like these knives but I just don't understand exactly. Everyone on here is saying that all these are made by Queen, but this was not mentioned at all, that I could see, on the Maher and Grosh website. If someone with more insight and info, could help me out, it would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bruce
