Boron Carbide Coatings

nonbox,

I received a call from Darrell the day before I got my first batch of coated blades back from Bodycoat. Darrell apologized for my order taking so long and said thay the company likes to get orders out within 3 to 5 days of receiving them from the customer. They had had my order for less than 2 weeks and said that it was too long. Turns out they had a clerical error that delayed my order. Heck, I was not even concerned. 2 weeks is not too long in my book but it seems that they have a problem with an order taking that long.

They really do want to offer great service and so far they have done nothing but that.

Barry thanks for being so understanding at Bodycote we try to ship all order no matter what size in 3 to 5 days. All customers orders are tracked and at the end of the month a report is posted as part of our ISO 9000 quality program.Any order other then R&D programs should ship in the 3 to 5 days not 2 weeks.

Darrell Lewis, can you post some before and after pics of your Boron Carbide coated knives?

This may be a stupid question, but can you do a clear coat?

Also, how corrosion resistant is this coating? Will it ever allow rust to form underneath?

Thanks
Jared

Just a dumb question, but if the boron whatever coating is so hard, how do you sharpen the knife?

I realize you don't coat right up to the edge, but when sharpening, the bevel (over time) moves up the blade and (presumably) into the coating, so you would have to rub away the area where the coating ends at the bevel. Sounds like it would just wear down the stones...

swede79, sharpening a coated knife is not a problem. Diamond hones work very well on coated or uncoated knives. Also, the coating does not peel, but when sharpening the bare steel of the edge the coating will come with the steel being sharpened. Kinda like scraped off if you know what I mean.

Larry, you're sumpin else!:D
I think wool would be better. Better corrosion resistance and wear resistance than cotton. :)

No Larry, as you should well know as you been in the business before (I still got your card from years ago) you dip the knives in different colors of cool aid! :D

Here is the before and after pictures requested. They are not the exact same knives, but the bare one will look like one of the coated ones here very soon.

Here is the before picture.

Thanks for all the great info you've contributed to this thread, Darrell.:)

Are you aware of any coating processes possibly in development which might work well with titanium? Obviously corrosion is of no concern here, but something to increase the scratch resistance of our ti handled folders would be a welcome development.

Bronco with Titanium being some what soft Mid 40's Rockwell C
Boron Carbide works well to help with scratching. It has much better wear then Anodizing for titanium.Boron Carbide is much harder RC 93/95
then the Titanium Oxide that is formed from Anodizing.

And Larry Harley you have meet my wife before and you know she won"t let me wear her silk underwear.Hell the last time I tried they fit like a thong and I walked around digging them from my A$$ all day.
I liked the feel just not the fit!!!

Darrell--

Do you coat individual blades on an after-market basis? In other words, could I buy any knife and send it to you for coating? Would the above-mentioned cost per blade apply? What about after-market coating of metal handles? Do you offer removal of an existing blade coating and replacement with one of yours? Cost? I realize that warranty issues with the original manufacturer might arise.

You've presented an excellent opportunity to interface with your company. Thank you--Will York

Can you clear this up... your coatings can be applied to titanium, and you have colorless coatings too. (Or do you?) Could some of these coatings be applied to decorated Sebenzas to protect the polished side and the anodized image?

Hugo.

Will York we can coat blades for individuals and the cost is a little bit higher. The only way to remove a prior coating is to sand blast it off.Metal handle knives can be coated we are coating the Kershaw Chive
and I also coated one of Calmillus's EDC for Will Fennell.
It's best we discuss your needs by phone prior to shipping me your knife. If you Email me you phone number I will call to discuss the details.

Bronco We can coat Titanium as I said in the prior post but Boron Carbide is gray in color. The only clear coating would be a Titanium or Zirconium Oxide and I haven't tried to coat over a Anodized titanium handle. If someone can supply me a colored scrap sample of anodized titanium I can deposit a clear oxide film to determine the wear.

Darrell--

That's great news. My question was hypothetical in that I can see possible applications on several blades I have now--and ones I might obtain. Thank you for your reply, and I'll be in touch once I've boiled my questions down into a few specifics.

Thanks again for offering us this chance to take advantage of your exciting new services.

Best--Will York

ROB Thanks for posting the before and after picture of a Boron Carbide coated knife blade.Simonich Knives and Bodycote have developed this process together and the Tiger Stripped effect is only offered Exclusively through Simonich Knives.
