BOS-Basic Outdoor Survival Knife

great review reuben... i really like the looks of that BOS knife... i'm a sucker for a nice wide blade on a knife... that looks like a great all around user...

very nice job bryan... another winner design for me to want..:D

OK, after THIS ONE, "no more steel for me this year!"

Nice work, Bryan, BTD, on the knife, the review, the addictive eye-candy....

I have to agree, this is a winner. The general dimensions (OAL, handle length, blade length, etc.) are right on for the intended use but the blade height/thickness combination make a huge difference over a number of those I have been playing with. This one - I have to try. A rock-solid tool of specific proportions and dimensions and,.... that familiar "Breeden charm" in its aesthetic. I want to get one of these in my mitts, even if I have to put off a couple "projects" to do it. I love a cutting tool with nothing to offer but performance and am excited about this one.

HA! Well said Jeff! I agree 100%

Great review and pics. That new Pathfinder, one with Orange scales, should be my next knife.

I like the looks of this knife and just ordered one. Can't wait to compare it to the PSKK I just got.

The newer version of the pathfinder reminds me a bit of the bark river Canadian special, an excellent blade shape for bushcraft.
Those handles look nice and comfortable too.

Hi all, WOW those are some great looking pics Reuben. Very nice review to:D
Thanks everyone for the kind comments on the BOS knife. As with most of the knives I make up if you wanted a longer or shorter blade or handle or differnent handle material and color that can happen. On Oct. 4 th I had a fellow who drove out from Colorado to see his knife being made and he chose the BOS also as his first custom knife and he was a pretty big guy his hands were way bigger than mine. a handle length of 4.25" for the med hand feels good to me but 4.5" I think feels even better But this guy ended up getting a handle length of 4.75". that felt just a little to big for me and 5" is way to big but I had a fellow order one and all I can say is that man must have huge hands. LOL So keep that in mind if there are any who would like different spects to meet your needs or wants. I am planning on making them up in
1/16", 3/32",1/8" and have made several in 5/32" thicknesses.

kgd you are correct the knife you wanted with a Kat knife blade and a PSKK/Peacemaker handle. The BOS knife is a second cousin (twice removed ofcourse:D) to it. Reuben wanted a little bigger knife than that and after we chatted and several prototypes we came up with what is now the BOS.
Just a very basic design but as Reuben said all function for a Basic Outdoor Survival knife.

Jeff you can always use more steel:thumbup:

Thanks again everyone and as Always Great job on the review and pics Reuben,

Bryan

Yes,........ VERY EFFECTIVE.
I think it's time to restock, Brian.:o

I feel like a knife-hog, but, hey, this was up all day and there was still one left.:foot:

I am glad that you scored one Jeff. I am sure you will like it.

I already put in the re-fill order. I guess I should have just got more in the first place. I could tell that this one would be a winner.

What blade thickness is the BOS in the photos? Looks thicker than 1/8 inch. Nice looking tools.
The one doing the heavier work is 1/8-inch thick.

Nice review BTD. I especially like your handly mod. I hope we start seeing that on more designs. That grip is VERY useful and can be used for some very powerful cuts.
I missed this earlier. There are a few makers that come to mind that use this feature. For example, RAT RC Knives, Muskrat Man, Brian Andrews, JK Handmade Knives Bushcrafter, and almost all of the original UK Bushcrafters from Bison.

It was my intention of making it a Bushcrafting Outdoor Survival knife with the Bushcrafting thumb notch but Bryan liked the Basic Outdoor Survival more and he is the maker. That is how the name came about.

Damn fine design I like the drop to the edge. Personaly even though the orange micarta fulfills the purpose of increased visibility, I still just can't warm to the idea. I to prefer a wider blade that cuts deeper with less resistance. Fine and functional design.

I very much disliked the orange handles when I first saw the pictures on the internet. They look MUCH better in person. Especially with the white liners, the handles look really sharp. And the G10 is very comfortable in hand, much more so than I thought it would be. My next Breeden is going to have the orange G10, I was so impressed with it.

I think that the G-10 has gotten kind of a bad wrap because some makers really try to shine it up and that makes it slick I use 80 grit to shape the handles that I make. It has a grippy kind of feel then Not like micarta but still not bad. I have used other grits but i like the 80 the best. I even went down to 400 and that was way to slick feeling.
