BOS S30V mini alpha hunter ?

Your photos don't show and clicking on them doesn't work either. Anyway you can get some pictures on here so we can see what we are dealing with?

Ok, now they are there. I'll have to wait for more knowing folks to take a look, but forgive me for saying, it just screams fake.:(

Sorry, but I cannot get pictures to load here....

Anyway, IF I remember correctly, Buck did make that knife in S30V for Cabelas awhile back. That knife had a "coated" blade and rosewood grips. Sorry I can't help more!!!

I bought one of those from a Galyans Sporting Goods store when they went out of business. I got it for 80% off! But...I traded it for a 311 Trapper with the Winchester shield and another buck (I think an older 505).

Are you referring to the one xia posted the pictures of?

The Alaskan Guide version was indeed made with S30V but as PFI said, it had the coated blade and Buck, USA and the number were stamped on the blade. The one pictured above looks to be lazer etched instead. I've seen too many fake Bucks (Strider Bucks complete with etched Bos stamps amoung others), even fake 110's on Chinese websites not to be suspicious but who knows. I have 119's with ATS-34 blades and 118's with D2. Buck can do just about what they want to with a pattern.

It would be nice if Joe would take a look and give his opinion. In fact, I'll send him an e-mail and ask him to look at this thread and the knives.

I broke out my record book. The knife that I purchased was indeed a Mini Alpha Hunter model 196, year marked 2004. The handle was rosewood, but I did not record if it was S30V or not. So, maybe it wasn't S30V...it seems like it was but I can't say for sure. By the way xia63, that's a good looking custom shop 110 in your pics.

Good idea Dave! I got the pics to load now! The etching looks different to me as well. I believe these were stamped but that has a newer date code on it than I am familiar with on the mini alphas.
Is the BUCK USA stamped or etched?

In 2004 the catalog says they were ATS-24.

I confirm that i bought it from a buck qualified agents in HongKong, but it is equipped with BOS 154CM stamp of the box, and a standard leather sheath and paperwork. same to standard 196rws. The dealer told me this also is comes from BUCK, perhaps BUCK company confuse the box.......maybe confuse the knife.......hehe

Almost all of my buck knives are from this delaer , so , i belive him. As you see, this one is mark the 2010's stamp. i just want to know the record of this version.

Does BUCK make alpha hunter series from BOS S30V? not from BOS 12C27mod?

Perhaps we will find out. I sent Joe Houser an e-mail and asked that he check and let us know.

I'm disappointed that we haven't gotten any input from someone at Buck about this one.
I do know for a fact that the Buck boxes have also been counterfeited, I have a couple of examples. Here's one:

Also, the Model and Bos logo are easy to fake using the laser etch, such as this one:

I hope that the Mini Alpha in S30V is the real thing and if so, it will give me another one to search for!

it seems too easy to contrast the real 888 cause i have the real one . hehe :D

anyway , thank you Dave.

i rather believe the 196 in s30v is real. :D

in my mind : Any fool can fake so cheap knife?

----if it is from a stain finished 195GYS, he have to change the handle from charcoal dymondwood to resin-impregnated rosewood, and change nylon sheath to leather. such a complex processing and material seems nobody are willing to do.
----if it is from a stain finished 196rws, maybe it is so easy to fake using the laser etch, but 154cm and s30v has similar cost , seems not worth to do .

hehe

anyway, the legal purchase channel, is an important means to ensure the authenticity of the goods.;)

thanks again !

It seems too easy to contrast the real mini alpha as others here have the "real" one, and none are etched. They are stamped. BUT I do not have a 2010 model. Buck has made the mini alpha in 420HC, ATs-34, 154CM, and sandvik. The S30V models were coated and stamped for Cabelas.
I don't think (if it is a fake), that it has anything to do with swapping handles, blade steel or sheaths. There would have to be a market for copying that knife, which there probably is. It would be made with whatever steel, and laser etched S30V. They didnt swap out the handles and rivets off of another buck blade. If they make fake knife for $5.00 and sell it with S30V stamp for $80.00 thats still profit.

Do you have the warranty papers with the knife? How about pics of the sheath? Is there any sticker inside the sheath?

I will also email Joe this morning!! Inquiring minds want to know :D
(I hope its real :D)

Heres another thread on this topic in another mfr forum. This is happening all over, and its buyer beware for sure!

thank you , postfallsidaho

as you said the method of making fake, I feel very desperate.....:mad:

i have a suit of alpha hunter to contrast, you can see the middle of the picture at :
http://xia63.blog.163.com/album/#m=2&aid=195980142&pid=5727776591

the fixed knife , 193(2009)/194(2008)/196rws(2008), all marked by laser etched, but 196cms(2007) and all of folding knife, 276(2009)/277(2008)/271rws(2008)/271cms(2009), are stamped.

i compare the laser etched careful, color and size, almost all were not completely the same. are these normal?:confused:

the 196(s30v) is not in pic, but it is same to 196rws(2008), include the box/warranty paper/leather sheath(a sticker, made in mexico), except the script. and it is stain finished. so i .......::mad:

i asked the dealer today , he said that is only one of the same order, all of these 196rws have same box. he is very accidental discovered this logo differs somewhat. ....now, he guess the BUCK is temporary out of stock , so make a new for order complemental .......
:confused::confused::confused:

That is a very nice collection! You seem to know your knives, so I'm really hoping that your Mini Alpha is the real thing. Many things have come out of Buck's factory that most people aren't aware of such as the 119 build out with charcoal handles and an ATS-34 blade, also the 118 with a D2 blade. Could be your's is something like that.

moment ago, i compare to the 151/172/498....etc, i find the logo of bos s30v in 196 is same to 498's , totally full , color and size and font........this is good.
