Boss St. Feathersticks requested.

I'm sorry, Iboschi and to you too, Amy. We have removed ourselved to work it out via PM.

No more thread derailment. :)

On a different note, I just spent 20 minutes going through old muppets skits on youtube......

I'm waiting on a Boss and would be happy to post sticks once I get it!

To get this thread back on track I grabbed a plank from my kindling box and just did this one real fast on the couch. It's doable, and I didn't choose the best piece of wood for neat/uniformed feathersticks, nor did I take the time to do so, I just wanted to show that it could in fact make decent shavings.

It can also shave print off paper without cutting all the way through.

That's not the factory edge BTW, thats convexed 15 degrees each side. It was sharp from the factory, not hair splitting, but did come pretty sharp.

^^^^^^Very cool! Post that in W&S and the hippy-granolas will poop their pants and vomit over your "sharpened pry-bar". :) Only skandi's are supposed to do that!!! Its, like.... a rule or something...

It's all about balancing the good with the bad to find the perfect knife. Yes, a thin custom scandi will probably work wood a little bit better in terms of carving/feathersticks etc.. but I can take the boss street, stick it in a frozen log and baton it using shot gun slugs if I had to. It's a very capable blade, especially for one it's size. When I tested it I batoned, chopped using a baton, made feathersticks. I batoned through a couple nails as well not paying attention.

If I sharpened up the knife before doing this and took my time a little bit more (We're talking 30 seconds of carving here), I could come up with much better results. That said, why? These will burn just fine.

That's funny. :D

Thanks for making me some fuzzies 230! It illustrates what I had hoped. The Boss St. isn't so thick a grind that it can't do detail work (double negative sorry). I had feared it would be such a thick grind (RC-5 for example) that fine work would be difficult. I can see from your pictures from both the work done and of the knife itself that I'll be able to do some fine work indeed. That is the closest shot of the Boss St. Ive seen thus far. Thank you.

As far as scandi's go, they're just not my taste really. It's as much about preference and skill as it is about the intended purpose of a blade. I've seen people do fine work with axes that made me wonder if I was born with all thumbs. People the world over use machete's for preforming very delicate tasks. I'm not so blessed. I just wanted to see some Boss St.'s in action rather than just sexy pron of them lying on someones pillow. I didn't really want to get into what knife works better for what, or the intricacies of what geometry creates the perfect feather stick etc. Just wanted some Boss St. feathers :D So thank you for that, I'd love more if anyone wants to make more!

As far as the choil goes, we learn to use what we have, and work with the strengths and within the limitations we're restricted to. I have a feeling this one wont bother me. So, now that my feather stick conundrum has been semi-solved, please feel free to describe in great detail how it restricts the use of the knife for you. I wouldn't be restricted by the choil in making feather sticks, so I'm curious how they inhibit anyones use of the knife.

In honor of our community here I would like to thank all who chimed in. EVERYONE. Whether we see eye to eye or we're not, it's communication that keeps family close. I appreciate the choil comments 230, Jaxx (like a protective older brother), and Amy (Coors lite anyone?) all working to answer questions and keep the trough clean. You all keep me coming back with your generosity, sincerity and unabiding faith in the Busse collective spirit. I'm proud to call you all comrades (not the paranoid cold war kind) and appreciate everything the Busse family and Hogs do here to make this a place I enjoy and where I can spend my time.

I make feathers differently than some I guess, but I start closest to the choil and push out to the belly of the blade. I find I make them best that way rather than from the belly to the ricasso. When I do so with a choil free knife, or a knife with a useful choil, I get very close to the blade and really get in there. With the choil, it doesn't allow me to get as close as i'd like. It's a personal preference thing. Honestly, there aren't many applications where the elf choil bothers me, it obviously didn't bother me enough from ordering one, but it's definitely a strike against the knife. If Busse released another blade this size with a choil, I wouldn't order it as I already have the BS, but if they introduce one with just a tiny sharpening choil, or a real choil, I would pick one up.

I was cutting up a box tonight using the boss street, works great, until the cardboard catches on the choil. It's fine, but this was a very large box, so it kept happening over and over. If it was a choil I could use, I wouldn't have had this problem. It was annoying enough for me to grab a different knife. Life threatening situation? Hardly.

It's a great knife, it's thick but not so bad that it really hinders cutting ability. It will perform every task a knife this size should and I think you'll be happy with your purchase.

Very cool...nice edge on that BOSS street too!

Actually, Jaxx is an excellent guy.

You should all meet him some day. It's well worth the effort.:)

You're way too kind. :o I'm just another guy who loves knives to excess! ;)
Guys, if you really want to meet a great guy, ya can't do much better than OldPhysics! He's truly a class act through & through and I'm honored to have spent time with him, myself. :)
