BOSS Street vs. Bravo 1... it's on!

Where are the sheaths? Mashed via Busse website or Independently from Mashed cat?

Direct at Mashed Cat.

but you should ask him if the current vesion will fit these new coated blades...
The Satin & Black Paper proto I have is just under .200" thick.

I'm sure he will have some for these for the CGs as soon as they start shipping....
As most of the Kydex makers will. ;)

Good point - my DCBB proto is .208, definitely thinner than the coated ones. My guess is that they are probably the same blanks, with the extra thickness coming from the coating and less metal removed during finishing.

I am making them for the Proto, & I have a CG on order since first day of the release.

That's interesting. I mic'd my DCBB proto at .220. The difference must be due to builder's tolerance. ;)

Mashed Cat has a pull down menu for selecting the CG version.

When I get mine I am going to back the edge up to a nice 30 degree polished edge, should make for a really nice everyday blade. :D

I think the test may hinge largely on edge geometry.

yeah, if you are testing it against the bravo it would depend on the edge, realistically you are not going to notice too much of a functional difference in the steel. Mike's A2 has excellent edge retention, should be interesting and the Bark Rivers convex grind/zero edge are razor sharp.....

I dunno...it appears to have a more stout handle and the no choil is a nice deal, satin finish, lots of handle options.....and it comes with a sheath....all for under $200.00 (A2 model). Hmmmmmmm...

Oh but wait there is the one tiny little detail that I noticed about it.........

IT AIN'T NO FREAKING :thumbup:BUSSE:thumbup:!!!!!!!!!

this is true but there are a lot of folks who collect both, myself included. Let's face it A2 is not going to be nearly as tough as INFI however it will hold up well for a blade it's size. I am really looking forward to seeing Mike's Bravo III in 3V, that should make for some interesting comparisons, it is supposed to carry a 12 inch blade.....

One thing I should mention, I will not be modding the BOSS to give it a convex edge prior to the competition. This test is to see which one I like better in its "natural" configuration.

While a RAT 4 may be more similar to a BOSS, similarity isn't the point here. The Bravo 1 is the best bushcraft/survival knife I own and I want to see if I can one-up it. The RAT 4 and Fallkniven F1 and S1 already lost in previous field tests, so this is just a one-on-one competition.

Here's a preliminary list of test factors I'll be considering:

Bulk
Cutting geometry
Balance
Ergonomics
Ease of sharpening
Edge retention
Corrosion resistance
Notching
Batoning (with cutting edge)
Batoning (tip-first)
Chopping
Slicing
Prying (light only - this isn't a destruction test!)
Stripping (bark and branches, not shirts and underwear)
Firesteel striking

Any ideas for additional tests?

Oh yeah, and hand-fatigue under heavy use. This is usually where most Busse's lose, in my experience, and comparing the Bravo 1 to most Busse's in this department simply wouldn't be a fair fight. But the BOSS looks sooo comfy...

that sounds like a reasonable test although corrosion resistance part will be tough unless you strip the Boss. Granted if my facts are correct INFI checks in with about 8% Chromium and A2 at 5.5% both are good, INFI will be better but unless you strip it....
Anyway looking forward to your test, right now the Bravo is my go to survival/bushcraft blade but have been starving for something in INFI to carry too.

Yup,

I'll have the CG as soon as the knives are shipped, I've changed the Mashed Cat web site to indicate the different models when ordering. Prototype sheaths available on demand. Cg's soon to follow, and to my understanding there will only be slight differances in blade thickness due to CG coating.

Looking forward to your test. CPM154 on a Bravo would be more interesting though..

Id throw featherstick making in there. Big difference between knives.
