As you all know, I have the rare privilege to be able to handle millions of dollars of fine cutlery firsthand.

This show has been in the planning for years, and I had been contacted by Paul Shindler and Owen Wood a long time ago to work with them on the photography needs. This started earlier this year, as the 25 invitational makers had been required to finish one of the five required pieces and have it professionally photographed by June 31st of 2010. I had finished up 17 of them and the others were handled expertly by Francesco Pachi and one by Eric Eggly. (Which, I am sorry, I don't have a webshot.)

Knowing these makers and knives were of the highest order, I really tried to do my best. So did the other pros.

I was asked not to post any preview shots before the Show. They wanted to dazzle the audience.

I’d like to post the knives shown in the catalog first. I also have a number of shots taken in the Show venue itself: The Boston Park Plaza: a fancy old-world hotel with lavish ornaments and service. Incredibly ornate and warm hotel built in the thirties, and outfitted with modern amenities. The paid entrance to the 10-2pm Saturday show included a full gourmet buffet lunch and a dinner later that evening. It was delightful to mingle with all, and we (Buddy Thomason, my wife Susan and I) sat with Barry and Lisa Davis.

The catalog itself was a testament to the caliber of this show. A 56-page glossy showcase of one of the maker’s works, along with pricing and descriptions for the remainder. (It should be noted that image credits were omitted by the printer, although specified by the promoters. )

I am editing some people photos from inside the Show, and I will include them in a subsequent post. Buddy and others will also show theirs somewhere, and I submit that I am NOT a world class showroom photographer.

More soon...

Absolutely stunning Coop.. The knives all seem to be examples of the best efforts by these makers... You brought your A game with your images, and the fact that you had "super models" to work with didn't hurt... (Whew, my monitor is still smokin' ...)  Best, Rich

Awesome! Bet the two tort inlayed knives were confiscated. This over-environmentalism is really getting out of hand.

It's my understanding that not one piece of elephant ivory was in the showroom. Everyone removed their elephant ivory pieces as there was a fear of confiscation, and not unfounded either.

Can someone comment on whether the European makers set up tables? I heard that Customs held up most of the goods, having to do with the aforementioned tortoise issue.

A spectacular array of knives beautifully captured and presented here. Thanks for the treat Coop. I know that when you are on scene you take good care of all of us that weren't. It is deeply appreciated.

Jim,

You always do a wonderful job on the photography. The Joe Kious knife was the last knife that Ron Nott engraved before he passed away. It's nice to see it in your format. Thank-you for posting it.

All the best,

Chris Malouf

Apologies all the way around, especially for tramping all over Coop's thread. I was away the last two days and thought I was posting the above post (Fish and Game) to the thread created sometime in the last week about the show. Now I see the other thread and realize I was old news.

Some really beautiful knives in these images. Amazing that we so often take the imaging part of this endeavor so lightly - but I can attest to the fact that Coop has put bucks in my pocket in the past, thanks to his imagery wizardry.

Best,

Bob Betzner

hehe

at least one of the tortoise knives was not confiscated - the Kious/Nott
left with me...along with another smaller Kious :D

generally I am not big into engraving, but this one was just incredible, as you can see from Coop's shot.

Great job Coop. I look forward to the rest.

Boston was a great success for myself. I sold 4 of 5 pieces. I really appreciate the work Owen and Paul put in!

The display so far, Coop is one of the best I have ever seen
in one place on the Internet!
As I am sure there is more to come, this will become a pilgrimage
Thread, courtesy of Paul Shindler, Owen Wood and you my friend...

And by no means have I forgotten the amazing products of
the collection of world class knifemakers that assembled together
for that one magic day last weekend...

Bravo to all involved!!!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)
