bought a benchmade today

I'm not positive because I don't own a full size Griptilian, but my Mini Griptilian's handles are about the same width as the Manix 2's handles at their widest point. So the full sized Griptilian's handles are probably thicker than the Manix 2's are.

To answer your question I think 154CM is the perfect compromise of edge retention, ease of sharpening, and corrosion resistance.

For my wider knives I put them in my back pocket if they are flat ans not too fat they aren't bothersome at all

I used to do this until over the course of several years the clips of knives in my back pocket wore a hole in the drivers seat of my 4Runner. After that on my new truck I put in seat covers and moved my blades to a front pocket.

OP, congrats on the new knife. I'm a big fan of Benchmade and the axis lock. I think you'll be more than happy with the 154cm

Would you mind elaborating on this? Just curious as my pocket space is also limited for what I need to carry and while it's not typical; occasionally the knife and phone do end up in the same pocket.

It's pretty basic, and some of the members nailed it. Some folks have a $200-$600 phone and being as fragile and huge as the new ones are, it makes me cringe the thought of sticking my phone and my (whatever knife I carry, usually something with a 3.75"+ blade) in the same pocket can make sitting down, and reaching in the pocket a bit uncomfortable. Not to mention scratching the hell out of a phone. I don't know too many people that have flip phones and most of the newer ones are like small tablets.
I carry my knife and wallet in my RFP, phone goes in the LFP, and keys on the belt loop. I know some folks have a pet peeve about carrying keys on the belt loop, making it seem like a jailer or sleigh bells, but I cannot really put a key ring with 7 keys on it comfortably in my pocket. Luckily, we have all electronic locks at work, so the real jailer key ring is gone, 16 really big keys replaced by a single name badge.

Because this thread needs pics:

154cm is a great steel. Tough, takes a very keen edge, holds it decently, and easy to sharpen.

For these reasons I think 154cm, ans S35vn are probably my favorite all around blade steels.

I love my mini-grip,

I can't find any fault with it at all. It is the perfect at work, around the house or going to town edc. Hold a good edge and at least so far hasn't scared anybody.

154CM is excellent steel.

Actually CPM154/154CM is the only stainless steel I really like.
My understanding of these steels is that CPM 154 has the same composition as 154CM, but made by a powder metal process instead of a melt alloy process. CPM 154 being the newer more refined version of the alloy composition

Ditto. I've taken to carrying clipped knives in one of my back pockets for that reason. Small traditional in front left with keys and change, wallet and phone in front right, modern blade(Kershaw Launch 2 as of late) in a back pocket. I'm ambidextrous so I don't reall have a preference which.

Edit: Hmm, this was supposed to have the quote from page one about cringing over the thought of knife and phone sharing a pocket. Oh well.

... It wasn't because i didnt like the spyderco but the spyderco manix 2 is a thick knife and was a tough fit with my phone and stuff in my work pants. Besides that issue i did like the knife.

154 is a good steel, but I'm not a huge fan (or hater)... It was an early "super" steel, supposed improvement on the original super steel 440c (of which I'm a huge fan), but the differences aren't really by a huge margin, and for the price some are charging for 154 I would just as soon go with 440c, but that is a personal preference and a moot point. It is a good steel, and benchmade seems to know how to work it well... Not really a "super" steel (anymore) in light of all the newer fancier alloys that have come out, but far better then your basic steels... Its a good all around steel.

As per the knife and phone in the same pocket, that is a no no... Not that your phone will damage your knife, but the knife can seriously hurt your phone screen and such. Certainly recommend against such practices whenever possible. Though I know, sometimes it happens.

*(the elmax Kershaw was either a Blur or a Knockout, both great knives... Blur has become my clear favorite edc knife by far).

With regard to the knife/phone pocket dilemma , I have four pockets in most of my pants (sans cargos). One dedicated pocket for my phone , wallet , knife and car key (transmitter). I don't keep my phone , wallet or knife in my pants while driving.

Never had a problem with BM's 154CM, or any of their other steels in the last 20 years. But back in the day (early- to mid-1990's), I found their 400C to be a bit soft for my tastes - and that's been my only "complaint" in two decades.

I think you made a good decision. I have owned both and only the BM551 remains. The 154cm on mine takes and holds a great edge.

Hope you enjoy your new knife. I like 154 CM and CMP154. Have a couple customs in this steel(s).

As far as the pocket thing, well my pockets are full of keys and change and a slip joint. If I have cargo pants on, I'll clip my ZT to my leg pocket. Wore holes in my car seat with clip and back pocket carry. Never again. I keep my phone in my shirt pocket which is one of the reasons I really like pockets in my shirts. Big fan of Carhart tea shirts. I may place my phone temporarily in my front pants pocket, but it won't stay there long. If no shirt pocket, I'll keep the phone in my back pocket, but I won't sit on it and it keeps getting moved around.

I've had my mini grip for 4 years and love it to death. 154cm strikes a good balance between edge retention, ease of sharpening, and corrosion resistance. I'm definitely a fan

Wallet back left, iPhone 6 back right, clip on knife front right pocket along with secondary (slip joint) front right, keys and keychain stuff front left and lighter on belt. Simple easy, plenty of room for more gear .. ;)

The Griptilian is one of the best overall pocket knives ever made, and 154CM is one of the best overall steels for a pocket knife. So I think you did alright. Enjoy the knife and the awesome Axis lock.

The 154 works great for me and touch-ups on the strop are easy.I agree the grip is great...I have 3.I started with a satin plain drop point(I really like this blade shape)and black handles. It feels a bit cheap in hand to me but it fills my hand and handles excellently.A very good knife.

I bought a REI limited edition with green and black G10 scales and S30V blade and it feels expensive and super solid in hand...but it is heavier than the standard grip.I just got a mini grip which because of it's full liners feels much cooler in hand than my first grip...a truly excellent small knife.

The Axis lock is barrels of monkeys fun and as fast as an automatic...I think you will enjoy your new purchase!
