Hello,

So I was in California a few months ago and I went to We Be Knives on the pier. I live In Texas. Where I live there isn't any real knife store, so I was pretty interested in this store. I got a very small Smith & Wesson S.W.A.T. (reading the box) tactical folder for about $65. Yes, I know now that at that price I probably could have bought two of the same knife off of knifecenter.com. I want to get a new knife (probably a Spyderco) and sell this one. The problem is they do not do returns, but I can exchange it. If I exchange it, the knife I buy will be overpriced as well. If I don't exchange it and just try to sell this knife to someone, I'll be lucky to get more than $15 for it. Any suggestions as to what I should do?

This may be a case of "sunk costs". It was your introduction to the tactical folder line. You might just want to keep it and perhaps down the line pass it to someone else who may develop an interest in collection knives?

There was obviously something about the knife you liked or you wouldn't have bought it. I'd say eat the loss, keep the knife for a while and if you end up not really liking too much then gift it to someone else. We all make hasty/unwise purchasing decisions on occasion.

I've got a few knives I got a great deal on money wise but I ended up not really liking them as much as I thought I would. Live and learn.

BTW, Spyderco is a great choice. If it's your first Spydie then I'd suggest one of the standards, either the Delica or Endura.

Welcome to BladeForums.

you could try putting it up on the trading forum here in exchange. maybe someone will bite at it.

The problem with trading is the knives I want, from what I understand, are knives that would be very unlikely to find. I want either a Spyderco Khukuri or a Spyderco Caspian Salt.

If you arent familiar with sharpening it would make a good learning piece.

Yeah I forgot to mention what I liked about it was it's assisted. I want either a Khukuri or a Caspian Salt, but from what I understand the Centofante is supposed to be a great knife. I also like it as well.

And thank you. This is actually my first thread.

Welcome to BF.

Why won't the store do returns? Returns are a pretty common practice, not many places don't allow them. There may be conditions like you must have a reciept or such, but they should accept a return.

I say keep it. There are much worse buys you could have made for $65.

Wll I talked to a guy on the phone and he said they have a no return policy. I told him nothing was wrong with, and I've really never used it, but apparently it doesn't matter. But I don't have the receipt anyway.

Spyderco Kuhkri (that's the way it's spelled on the box) is discontinued and can be had pretty cheaply for the time being.
I just bought 2 and they was around 75 each shipped.
No you won't get a trade for a Spyderco, here IMO. Not unless you nearly give your S&W away. (trading can be hard even when you have stuff other's want) You learned a lesson and that's not to buy from these full retail stores, check out prices online. It's not hard to find deals on what you want. And try not to let it bother you that you overpaid for the S&W, we all have been there and done the same.
Like has been said you may as well keep it and use it. Save up and buy what you want and put it behind you.

A wack first knife is great to have! Carry it around, beat on it, learn to sharpen on it, throw it into walls, turn it into a hat (not really), etc. In a few years time, once you've got a nice collection of spydies, benchmades, emersons, and maybe a sebenza, you'll look back at that awkward little Smith and Wesson and be grateful for all the stories you can tell about it. Loads of character. Kinda like your first car. The AC is a vacuum, the radio sounds like it's underwater, and it causes a smokescreen every time you start it up. But you still love it :D

Or you could toss it into a trade as a deal sweetener.

Also, Texas and no knife shops

Well what do you mean I wouldn't get a trade for a Spydie unless I nearly gave my S&w away? I don't expect to make money off of it, and I don't really want it. I recently got an Emerson A-100 and I have a Kershaw Leek, so it doesn't really matter. I just don't want to give it away for essentially nothing in return.

Well it's San Angelo, Texas. If you've been here you'd understand.

GREAT advice.

I was thinking the same thing as I read this.

I (long ago) found I could not live without a similar S&W knife and bought it. This thing has about as much in common with Smith&Wesson as I have in common with a SWAT team member, but I loved it once, and for that reason I will probably keep it always.

Recently I decided to learn how to sharpen effectively, and that knife is a perfect specimen for this capacity. I can make it REALLY sharp, and because it is cheap, it fails to hold the edge for very long so I can again practice my edging skills!

Once you start buying great knives you will want to have that thing around to compare. By noticing the subtle (and not so subtle) differences between it and nicer knives you will appreciate this hobby that much more. I say hold onto it and continue to learn from it.

To be honest I doubt many would want it that have and trade Spydercos.
So, you would have people wanting boot and you'd not get near the 65 you have in it. That's my opinion. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's how I would call it. You want to kick it in on a deal, sure you could. But, if it was me and I'd bought it for 65 I'd just keep it. Heck, I still have knives like that laying around. I paid too much long ago, I've moved on to other stuff now. So, I either use them or gift them.

At least you have the wonderful A-100:thumbup: I would put it in the trade forum and ask for maybe knives like the buck vantage series, the subcom series, maybe a kershaw skyline, maybe even opinels and saks, that way if you really dont want to keep it, you can try out new blades..but i dont think you will get a trade for something in the price range of what you paid for it:(

Thanks!

And um... How exactly do I get to the trade section?

And also, Jill, would you be willing to sell one?:D
