I don't know what S&W knife you have, but some of them aren't bad. My recommendation is don't trade with that store or they'll take another bite out of you! Just keep the knife or swap it. Many of us have drawers full of knives and it's no big deal. And the S&W you got might be better than you think. (Can you post a photo? A part number?)
In today's market, we're spoiled. In reality, it's kind of difficult to end up with a truly awful knife unless it's sitting there by the register in a fish bowel or hanging on a rack at the Dollar Store. Your chances are greater overpaying for a knife than getting a terrible one, and some knives today sell for as much as a handgun!
So keep your knife or swap it, or gift it to someone. I have a very nice S&W hawkbill knife that originally sold for $85 (yet I paid $5 because the store just couldn't move them). And it's not a bad knife by any stretch!
Education sometimes costs $$$, so chalk it up as such. Don't just assume it's a crummy knife that needs immediate replacement. Just sayin'....
