Bought my first Opinel (Pics P.3)

Does look good Ferahgo I must admit. That Civil War re-enactment scene sounds fascinating, I'd love to get involved in something like that, and I'd say you have the perfect type of folder there for the job. Reckon it'll develop it's own patina over the duration of that particular conflict. Best of luck with your endeavours my friend.

You should check it out, then. I am sure you have a unit nearby. And most units will lend you all of the gear you need in order to fight. Uniform, weapon, etc. All you need if the powder and primers.

I am the closer of the two. The person behind me is my LT. All of the gear seen in this photo was lent to me.

So, I got this to a whittling edge, and I though "Why not? If I can split a hair in half lengthwise, I should be able to shave with it. Right?"
It works. I gave myself a minor cut or two, but it works well.

That's a great photo Ferahgo, you really look the part. Waiting for a bone/antler handled congress knife to arrive in the post at the moment, which I'm thinking would be appropriate for this period. Guess I'd have to be an officer to carry one of those Though?

Tim, I think it's VERY cool that you have a knife that's literally EDC!!:cool: You should show it more often! :D:D

Very much so late to this post GT but here's a photo of ol' faithful after...6 months of daily carry? One waterstone sharpening and all that is required is a good strop every week or so. Their carbone or 1095 as I've looked up holds a great edge and nothing really does beat that convex as seen by that wicked gleam. ;)

Your mods turned out great Sarah :D I'll have to think about giving the 7 a stain sometime.

1095, eh? Thanks for the info! I was wondering what it was. I have found that mine dulls pretty quickly, though. I just strop it after every notable use, though.

Woops correction 1086 carbone steel. It might help to thin out the convex just a touch. I made mine leaner on the waterstones especially near the belly since it was ground a bit thicker.

Good to know. Thanks for the info. I will be sure to put it to good use!

Their Carbone is on the soft side and rolls easily. The Inox (stainless) still walks and talks like carbon steel but is a little harder and holds an edge better.

No patina though. :(

I picked up a No8 a while back and I love how sharp it is. Very easy to get it shaving sharp too. Haven't really put it through its paces yet (one hazard of suburban living) but I'm sure it would hold up well. Considering forcing a patina just for fun but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Well, it has processed about 40 pounds of tomato so far. It is holding the edge quite nicely.
