Doc, I'm pretty sure I'm working with sugar maple. There's a lot of it around here. I'm encouraged that I got smoke yesterday. If the maple doesn't work, I've got a softer piece of white birch waiting.

mewolf, and ALL,
took the night off last night, had some other 'stuff' (read:crap) I had to do.

I'll be back on it tonight/this weekend.

Well?

My computer is dying. Hopefully, I'll be up and running soon. I fully expect positive results when I get back.

A nudge from Doc, needed actually. Got busy with other things.

Have 2 pieces of Tulip Poplar drying in the garage, it was deadfall, but still had moisture in it.

Will try that and see if it will form a coal.

Bang, Bang....You got me! [holds hand to heart]

OK OK, I'll go try it this evening.
My Tulip poplar wood should be nice and dry now. Dang, I have no tinder bundle, how bout we compromise on the pic of an ember??

I got chores to do first, stack firewood, split kinlding, light woodstove, etc etc....

DOC, congrats on the PC!!! good to hear from you again!

Here is your big chance to not only make the fire, but to use it and enjoy the fruits of your labors..

Sorry guys, not tonight. [sigh]

Used a butane lighter to light the woodstove. ;)

It is on my list of things to accomplish...rest assured it will not go by the wayside. once proficient, that's how I'll ight the woodstove every night!

figured I might as well piggy back on this thread rather than start another one. Been trying the past three days, it's so close I can taste it. Using a cedar spindle and fireboard. Get it smoking pretty good, piles of dark brown/black dust. But no ember :grumpy: . My technique always goes to crap once I see a lot of smoke around me and I try to really start cranking on it.

Cedar can work, but it varies a lot in hardness. Too soft, and you don't get enough friction for ignition. Try a different wood.

It's like solo sex;) just be steady and when you think you're all done keep going just a little longer.:D

Ahhh it makes perfect sense now :p . Next try tomorrow. I only give it a couple of tries a day, don't want to get too frustrated.

Here's one possibility - "damn, look at that smoke, time to give it s**t. What, no coal???????? " It's possible that once you see the smoke, you're so enthused that you push down harder on the drill and go like hell. If you put too much pressure on the drill, you increase the size of the 'grindings'. This increases the ignition temperature. Next time, increase the speed, if you want (probably not necessary if you brought it from no smoke, to smoking pretty good), but do not increase the pressure on the drill. Also, you may want to try a different material. Cedar is not too bad a material, but Basswood (Tilia americana) and Cottonwood (Populus deltoides) works better. Keep us updated.
