bow drill fire

I have, and do pretty regularly. If you are needing help with one, there are plenty people around here with great tips and advice on the topic.

I have about 10 coals under my belt now. There are a number of members here who are really experienced in it. I learned what I know from Doc Canada and received other pointers from Magnussen. Talfuchre has a tonne of experience with bow drill as does Tonym. Then of course there is our moderator - kevin estela (Kestela) who teaches the technique regularly as a wilderness survival instructor.

I like to prctice that any chance I get.. which admittedly given my location is not often.. My wife had banned me from starting friction fires in the house since I burned a hole in the carpet with a coal.

hundred+ and I still don't rely on primitive fire for survival for what is worth.

I have, but it's been many, many years. It's on my list of things to start practicing again. It's amazing the things I let go by the wayside over the years. Now that I'm kinda retired, I have more time to get back into things like bow drills.

I produced my first coals with the bow and drill, and hand drill, over 40-years ago. Have done it countless times since in demonstrations, living history events as a reenactor, survival classes, etc. To a much lesser extent; the fire plow. Now there is some real work for ya. :)

Now there's something I've yet to do; the fire plow. I've seen it done, but it looks like a lot of work.

Listen to KGD - he posted up a while back and I wondered if he was ever going to learn the process - but he is cruzing right along busting out coals.

His first was on a rainy day - he had good instruction and stuck to it - no small feat.

There's the key imo. There's lots of guys on here who can guide you through the process but sheer determination will go a long way.
Good advice, Talfuchre

I've made about 5 or so, thanks to the help of TonyM and Talfuchre! It took me a little coaching at first, but it was worth it in the end!

Bow drill and hand drill. I find that If I want to carry a set, the hand drill gets it. The only advantage I find with the bow drill is poor materials are more suitable ie. wet or too hard or no long straight sticks. Hand drill for me is quicker. Very satisfying thing to accomplish.

That Survival in the Bush film is amazing! I wish they'd shown how he got the fire plow from smoking, to coals, to flames.

The canoe construction was incredible too. Makes one feel pretty inadequate in comparison....

Thanks!

I lost my Fire bow virginity this winter. It's a great skill to not only know but master. The life you save just may be your own.

Once. Years ago. 100 degree heat and I was sweating like crazy by the time me and a buddy got 'er done. Much easier ways to make fire, but it was fun nonetheless.
