bow drill fire

The key to making it easy seems to be the materials. For both spindle and fireboard the best I've found is dry yucca stalks. A pine knot makes a good self lubricating handpiece. It;s nice to keep a bit of cedar bark fluff to get the coal to flame up. I often don't carry the bow but just a piece of strong cord.

For most fires I just use matches or even a propane torch, but it's nice to start a ceremonial fire this way... for celebrating special days or special events... that way the fire is new... made just for the event. It's something that was done long ago and even with modern conveniences a no-match fire is still very meaningful and amazing.

Doc,

I just went back and read that entire thread. I know I have thanked you before - but your tutorial really put me over the edge when making good bow drill fires.

I practiced for months and months after this tutorial. My form has improved and my understanding is better. Everything you say in this tutorial is ROCK solid - I didn't appreciate all the of the knowledge you imparted when I read it a year ago - I do now.

Thanks old man!

TF
