Bow Hunter Kills an Elephant

This is an awesome thread..... just the right amount of edginess to be exciting... but enough respect to not offend too deeply.

Ya bunch of wussies!

No offense man, but everyone is entitled to their opinions, I for one do not want to tell people to keep em to themselves. I love seein both sides of the gun in these threads....

Good point....
It just seems like hunters are loosing their rights every year. It is a loosing battle. People are typically not educated about these things and it really irritates me when people aren't educated on something they are debating.
I have ranted on this before about the Cougar Population in Oregon- We no longer are allowed to hunt Cougar and bear in Oregon with the help of dogs. This is all because the people in Portland that have absolutely no idea what is going on off the paved city streets. They think those cute cuddly little cats are so helpless and aren't able to protect themselves against these mean guys with guns and dogs..:jerkit:
They are clueless, our deer and elk populations are dropping because there are more cats in Oregon than EVER.
It all comes down to education.Anyone on this thread that says the lady was an idiot or was hunting for the wrong reasons, is, in my opinion, wrong. Learn about hunting, what it means to the communities in Africa that live off of hunters that have enough money to go hunt there. It does more good than bad. Everyone has their own reasons for hunting. I will never hunt for something that I wont eat. If I kill a cougar, I am eating it. As someone said earlier, most people aren't hunting for food like we say we are. It is true, most people, with a few exceptions, are only hunting for the thrill of the hunt and the meat is a delicious bonus. I sadly say, I am most likely that person. I can easily go out and get a beef. No problem. I do like deer and elk more though. Come fall, I am drooling at the mouth to get out there and hunt. Most of us are, but not drooling over the meat we hope to get. It's the thrill of the chase.

Thats just crazy about the Cougars and bears... Oregon is a pretty liberal state, I cannot say that is suprising.. but damn!

Anymore I stick to bird hunting with dogs. I eat em, and its a great time to catch up with grandad...Never hunted birds(Quail) with a Bow, but mtnfolk mike does. Talk about a rough shot!!!

I am not aginst hunting at all - but hunting an elephant to win a bet is just wrong, yes the meat was used, yes maybe money went into the locals pockets, however hunting to win a bet was not on.

I will and do happily hunt pigs and deer and goats, and I hunt and kill possums and rabbits and magpies. Occasionally horses get culled, and I have no problem with farming for meat, but I do these things for reasons, just to kill an animal for a bet does not seem a justifiable reason.

Hunting birds with a bow is an absolute blast... I was deer hunting with a few buddies a few years ago, I saw a bunch of grouse go running across the old logging road I was walking down. I went over the edge and found them, ended up nearly taking the head off one. I grabbed it, and started walking back to camp, I thought I was going to have this great story to tell the guys. Then one of the other guys walks down the hill onto the road in front of me. His bird had no head, shot it clean off. haha. he chased them to me without either of us realizing it.

great kill by a great huntres. I didnt read any thing un ethical, from that one artical, about the hunt. Im very impressed that any one could get to with in 12 yrds, reportedly, of an elephant and down it, Im damn impressed! as to whether or not she ate the meat? im sure she recieved at least a meal out of it. I know that given a chance to hunt africa I'd do it, even on a bet (with the meat going to locals who need it of course).
as for the remark about the huntres being a silicone filled femininst? HELL NO! if she was than, she wouldnt have been in africa hunting! (I know a few liberals and feminists and the ones that liken to silicone dont hunt, nor would they ever!)

So its a good kill by a good hunter, with a good ending. whats not to love? she stepped up to a real challenge and succedded, she gets a cheers from me.

P.S. im going to go over to the Hunt of a life time and seee what I can find on this. . . . . . sure do hope im not the only one trying to check this out.

P.P.S. the dot org site that was misguidedly (I bet intentionally) linked to the article is getting hit by some pertty ingorant people, I fel sorry for the kisds that its set up to help. (environmentalists trying to stop all hunting because they think its "crule").

I guess my objection is to her motives for the kill. I'm not against hunting in any form, only in the last year did I start to find out about hunting pigs with knives and dogs. For me there's two ways to hunt.

1) To kill for meat, which means quickly and as painlessly as possible
2) To kill to test your skill

To me it seems she got into a pissing contest with another guy, made a bet and yeah won it. I know a lot of people go for trophy hunting and this is probably the logical end of that sport. Going for the biggest kill you can. It just doesn't do it for me.

I don't think she'll be the last hunter to do something I don't agree with and what does that amount to? Nothing, I just wouldn't buy her a drink in a bar is all. As for how she killed the elephant it must have been above board and within whatever guidelines there are, she has too many sponsors to gamble otherwise. Would have been nice to see more unbiased press coverage but couldn't find much on the web. Either massively pro or against nothing with just the facts.

As a few have said at least a rigorous debate has come out of this and maybe shone a little light where otherwise it wouldn't have. Anyway just my opinion on it.

I have read this entire thread debating wheather to set the story correct on Fred Bear and his Grisley Bear. I lived in Alaska when. Many Alaskans were furious. In the video Fred hides behind a rock when the bear comes around the corner. He puts an arrow in the Bear perfectly and the Bear runs about 100 yards away from him and dies. Great stuff. HERE IS WHAT THEY DO NOT TELL YOU. It was something like the 16th bear he shot. The others were all finished off by a rifleman. Fred paid the game department for all 16 (or so) bears. He was backed up by a man with an Elephant run (.458 mag I think). The video is very exciting. I have no proof of the above. Only every hunter and gun shop in Anchorage new all about it.
For the record, the poster that talked about saving the animals in Africa by going and hunting them has it right. If the game has no monitary value the locals will kill them for food and to make room for their cattle.

I think this was written to elicit some negative responses as well. Mete, Nice dangermouse avatar!!

1) I don't think the hunter's motive matters as long as the hunt itself is conducted ethically. The animal was killed cleanly and the meat wasn't wasted.

A butcher could be a vegetarian. He is preparing meat for other people. So was she by killing the elephant.

2) How DID she manage to get into the herd without getting chased off or killed? Probably by rubbing down with elephant dung to throw off their sense of smell.

My father taught me a lot about hunting.Never shoot what you can't see and if your going to kill something do it in a way the animal never knew it was in trouble till it's dead.

I like Elephants. I have lots of little ones all over the house and the main painting in the lounge is a head shot of a pissed Jumbo.
I hunt. I could never hunt elephant
BUT
What I haven't seen mentioned here is how an old Jumbo dies "naturally" They starve, after their last set of molars wear down they can't eat and eventually they just fall over from malnutrition. Not a nice way to go.
The other thing is it was mentioned about the village selling the licence and getting the meat, (4 tons is a lot of Goulash).
But that trophy money also pays for the rangers and guards that protect the wildlife from poachers. Maintains the vehicles etc.
And I understand that licenses are only issued for old animals past their prime. This also helps keep numbers of animals in check, an adult elephants leaves a wrath of destruction in their wake from just their normal feeding habits.
The alternative is a cull. Which costs money that The Governments of these third world countries can ill afford.
I like elephants I could never hunt one but I understand why it is necessary to sell licenses to hunt them.
And toget within twelve yards of a "wild" anything ( that just might step on you if your not watching) Is pretty impressive.

Pretty much sums it up for me.

All the best,
