Bow hunter turned into a pinata by black bear

Wow, only a mile from his house, and with a cub. And two other bears (yearlings I'm guessing?)

Sorry mama bear, but your cubs are going to be orphaned. Obviously he didn't have time to argue with his broadheads...
Glad it wasn't worse - yet another case where a safety belt saved a life !

So many of these "attacks " are bears doing their natural thing rather than being an 'evil' bear. They are going after food or protecting their cubs .That hunter should have done something immediately before they started climbing !!

Good story with a satisfactory ending for all concerned!

He may have improved his chances by carrying a hand-gun too, the sound of it firing would almost certainly have scared the bears off before they dared tried climbing.

Well I'm glad the guy didn't got hurt badly, but the bear mother will probably be killed so not a too great ending.

Some determent mean would have been appropriate.
The no-cellphone could have been problematic (allthough real problem is probably initial reaction).

Shout as loud as you can or use a very loud whistle and wave your arms. A compressed air horn is good too. Then of course as it gets closer use bear spray then bullets !

So, its OK for him to hide in a tree with a bow, but not OK for the bear to look after its offspring?

Where is your sense of 'fair go'?

But I guess if you really feel like that, its probably better to just wear your cammies when you go to get meat at the supermarket.

What exactly got your panties in a bunch here? Is your problem that the hunter was "hiding" in a tree? It isn't "fair" to you? Are you even slightly aware of how predators hunt?

Are you seriously offended at the idea of a man using deadly force when attacked by a beast?

Since you can't resist putting the person and the beast on the same plane, you should at least acknowledge that the bears came up the tree he was in!

First of all, he didn't say he was happy that it's public policy to take out a bear who's attacked a human, so you may be overinterpreting.

Second of all, "fair go"? I don't make my way through the world looking for other living creatures to defend. I defend myself and my own. Let the bears learn the same and avoid trouble. It's not a matter of fairness but of self-defense.

No need to get sarcastic and insulting about going to the supermarket in camouflage.

To quote the noticeably brief article:

DNR Warden Mark Schmidtz says an attack like this is extremely rare. In fact, in his 30 years living in Ladysmith, he says this is the first bear attack he's heard of.

Schultz plans to get back out to hunt again, but says he'll stay far away from the place he was attacked.

The warden didn't mention tracking down that bear, and Schultz plans to avoid the area, presumably because the bear isn't going to be killed.

So would that be a hell of a situation or what?

First you are in camo so the bears probably didn't realize you were there.

Then the BABY starts climbing. So going thru my mind would be do I yell and hope they realize I'm up there and run off- with the chance of pissing off the mother? Or do I set there and hope the baby climbs up and then down,.

This is what got 'em all twisted ;)

Well, the way I read it, DeadEye was suggesting that he would have shot the bear, even though she was a sow with cubs, because she was an immediate lethal threat to him. I find this completely reasonable.

Discussion of the policy of putting "problem bears" down is a seperate one.

He should have yelled at the bears. They may have been scared away. I dont like shooting bears. They are pretty nice animals. It isnt their fault their habitat is being overrun by housing developments. If your in grizzly country its kill or be killed, but black bears are USUALLY protecting their cubs. I like the bears and dont like to see them get hurt.

What about the little bells that you can tie into your shoelaces or attach to your walking stick?

As soon as any flesh is punctured, ALL bets are off!!! I would have loaded an arrow way before momma got anywhere near the tree and my stand, cubs or no cubs. I'd deal with the DNR after I was safe.
