Bow hunter turned into a pinata by black bear

If your in grizzly country its kill or be killed, but black bears are USUALLY protecting their cubs. I like the bears and dont like to see them get hurt.

Makes me all warm n' fuzzy inside. Tough titty if the blackie is protecting its cubs. Would you rather that the guy is eaten alive then dies? Thousands of deer are hit and killed by cars in North America every year. No one sheds a tear over these deer. We do the best we can to hunt ethicly and protect wildlife, but s**t happens. Life isn't fair and bad things happen to good people. If that bear was trying to do me, a bad thing would happen to it also.

I didn't read the artical, but heard the story on the radio on the way home from work.
He shoulda, what if, I woulda, doen't mean crap. It's easy to judge from the safety of home. The way I heard it was that he saw the bears in the area and when they were under his tree he DID start yelling to chase them away. The cub got scared and crawled up the tree PAST him and started to bawl. The sow responded to it's calls and went to "save" the cub. It is unlikly the bears will be killed, and it is unlikly the hunter holds any grudge. There is a heck of alot more encounters with Black Bear than Griz; That's because Blackbears live relitivly close to humans. I'd be willing to bet this all happen in a very short time period and shooting the sow with an arrow would have not stopped her, very quickly. There isn't a parent I've met that wouldn't rip out the heart and eat it of a would be attacker before they hit the ground dead. Carrying a pistol while bow hunting deer is not nessessary here in MN in 99.9% of the time. Yea I know, you wouldn't be the 1/10%, but you go out on the highway everyday and never give it a thought.
We'd all be safer if we just stayed home and collected knives.:D

Talk about a unwanted result, sounds like he should of just watched and enjoyed the show, but again as you mentioned it's easy to call it like that in your house.

Admittedly I haven't had anywhere near the tree stand time I used to get before I bought my bird dog who's eight now. And I never saw or gave a thought to bears while hunting or canoeing because I never saw hide nor hair of them.
Now in the past four or five years I see sign of them almost every time I go out grouse hunting or on canoe trips and have had one too close for comfort call with a happy ending my self. I've also ran across bear bait stations in the woods which I'd never encountered up until the past few years. So I guess what I'm saying is we all need to be more in tune with are surroundings these days because things like this are happening with greater frequency and if you don't want to carry a handgun while bow hunting a can of mace for the weight may not be a bad ideal and if your just out and about bells and singing wouldn't be a bad thing along with mace or a handgun.;)

You know they always say, "A bear attack like this is really rare, in fact I have never seen on in 30 years." Well, let's see 10,000 game wardens could all NOT see one but where does that leave you?

Remember when we had a hellish winter and the deer sufferd starvation because the snow was so deep?:D Seems the Wolves have rebounded as well.;)

Deep snow, whats deep snow:p Yeah it made for some sorry deer seasons:( As far as the wolves, I live in the burbs so I don't get to wolf country as much as I'd like to. I did hear one of the largest packs in N. America range just N.W. of Fourtown lake in the BW, so we went there last year put didn't even get a glimpse or here a howl.:(

 right, I wonder if a carry permit would work in a guys favor:confused: but you can poses one while bow hunting bear:cool: I'm not big on the bear hunting though.
