LCS?

If you want to, email the dimensions (plus an inch or so on each side) and your mailing address to me and I'll cut a piece of deer raw hide you can soak, form, and then varnish to slip inside for protection of the more tender elkskin.

The varnish is my form of waterproofing the rawhide.

You'd only really need a fold-over on the blade and point edges.

I just backtracked to Yvsa; yeah, raw hide liner - wow- from Kismet.

I'd like to see this happen.

Yup, it'd make it carryable.:D

That is very much what I have in mind for the Rose Edutsi...it'd be awesome! Instead of a belt loop though, a chocolate elk shoulder strap...can you see my vision?

I can see it Uwinv. A beautiful Chocolate Elk Baldric so to speak!!!! Doubled and edge laced with Tan Elk all the way around for extra strength would really set it off ainnit?:D

That's it Edutsi...for the Rose! Let's do it on my next visit! Can we please? Pretty Please? ;)

Seriously...I'd love to work this project with you...it would make for some powerful medicine...

Tandy Leather has some pretty decent rawhide for sale. I bought a chunk, but haven' tried it out yet. About right thickness for sheaths, though
Yvsa, could rawhide be considered NdN Kydex? :D
I have an 'old' sheath from the Eastern Woodlands made out of rawhide, and painted. Or, it might have been a Boy Scout project from the '30s or '40s. No way to know for sure. Those old-tyme scout masters sure knew their stuff :=0 :)

I haven't bought any of Tandy's but have seen it. I buy mine from a local dealer when I need it.
Rawhide comes in several different thicknesses depending upon where on the hide it comes from. Generally the neck and shoulders are the thickest. The old time ndn shields were almost always made from the skin over the buffalo's neck, hump area.
Properly made they could be as much as 3/8" thick!!!! :D

Shore enough! Rawhide was used for lots of things. One excellent example is the Plain's ndn's Parfleches. A huge piece of rawhide was cut into a rectangle and then scored at the proper places and bent, creating a rectangular "folded box" that would endure for many, many years. The Parfleche was used for storing about everything the ndns owned and some were quite large, approaching medium/large trunk size in many cases, no pun intended.;)
An early piece of Samsonite so to speak.:D ;)

Brian either way it could be a very valuable piece! Such items look really nice when mounted in a shadow box and displayed.:D And you're right on! Some of those old Boy Scout masters were as good at ndn lore as many ndns were, sometimes even better!

Just a thought for the sheath. Why not make a welt of kydex with a groove to hold the blade safely. It could be covered with rawhide so as not to be visible and then sewn into the sheath. Wouldn't be totally traditional but should be safe.

It would probably be easier and neater to use kydex, but part of the charm is the way rawhide folds and curls, adds to the looks a great deal.

*SNIPPED*

Yeah, in traditional Japanese Armor, it was composed of either Steel Lamellar, or Leather. Water Buffalo hide was used. The text I read said the back was used most often. It also said you couldn't cut the hide and punch the holes. You had to *SAW* it and *DRILL* the holes!

Thanks Kis,
Spent the last hour surfing. Some nice pics.
Interesting that most of the sheaths mention a rawhide liner.

Wow, the sheath looks alright. It's not my taste. As far as the handle wrap goes and forgive me for sounding terribly rude, but I honestly know of a 16 y.o. on swordforum.com that could do a better job at wrapping that handle. I mean I am honestly surprised anyone would like that handle wrap. Is everyone being polite or am I the only one that thinks that handle wrap looks amatuerish at best. Yikes is all I've gotta say, Yikes.
