Someone posted a thread about what gun they like to carry in the woods. Well, I want to see what sort of bow you like to shoot in the woods. Not necessarily for hunting; can be targets, stump shooting, whatever. Training wheels are acceptible.:D

50# fibreglass recurve. I'm not a 'wheels' fan, but to each their own.

I'm currently working on a HHB 50-55# self bow (not recurved) and have been for.......... how long? :( Oh well, I'll finish it one day.

I shoot an old Magnabow that is too bulky and too heavy. Someday I will replace it.

I shoot a Hoyt X-Tec compound. Back when I wore short pants I cut my teeth on a recurve, a Bear Minuteman takedown! ;)

I recently watched John McPhearson's Naked into the Wilderness #3: Primative Bow and Arrow and now I'd really like to make a bow of my own.

great post....

there are a lot of gun totting folks on here, but i wasn't sure how many folks were into bows....:) i have 2 recurves and 5 longbows....:D

my favorte bow for small game, stump shooting and 3-d shooting is a 58 in. brushbow, made by a CA. bowyer friend of mine named steve abbott..... it pulls #47 @ 28 in.. it has osage on the face of the limbs and yew on the belly of the limbs, with a gorgeous cocobollo riser...... this little bow rocks, it's a sweet shooter.... as with all of steve's bows.....:D

i've been doing a lot of quail hunting with it these past few years.....:D it's much lightrer than my shotgun.... though, i have yet to limit out, like i normally do with my shotgun.....:o

my other bow that i do most all of my hunting with is a 64 in.. #58 reflex-deflex longbow, made by bruce baughn of chapparal archery in NM..... this thing is a rocket.... shoots an arrow pretty darn fast.....:D

Bowtech extreme solo, because it's the only bow I've got! Well... come to think of it, I've got an old PSE Nova that could use a new string too. I think nice lightweight stickbow would be nice just to blow around in the woods, though I wouldn't really like the drop in accuracy and power.

By 'cut my teeth', do you mean literally? If so, dude, how? Lol. As I've said before, I'm saving up for a new, custom recurve from www.recurves.com . It's going to have a maple riser with pacific yew limbs, and it's gonna be sweeeeet. Nobody's gonna touch that baby but me. Now I just need to find a good, secluded place to shoot.

Well, there are enough men around here that are interested in primitive archery that they get together and hold shoots where they stroll quietly through a remote area and shoot at prepositioned targets that simulate targets of opportunity you mighty see if you were out looking for meat.

Here's another thought. Check out the use of their little bows by the bushmen in Africa. From what I've read, they use short little bows that are intended only for small game at close range. That concept might still have a place on other continents. Bushmen are little folks anyway, so they can't handle a big bow and it doesn't take much to feed them. :D

a small game bow is an interesting concept...

RR-- the bow i shoot(in the pics) is a perfect small game bow... it's only 58 in. long and draws #47.... this little bow has shoot a lot of squirrels and rabbits and some qauils too...:D

i have the bowyers info. if your interested.... he makes a great bow for the $$$.... he uses a lot of osage, yew, bamboo and cocobollo.... they are rediculously lightweight....

drop me a line if you want his info... allscared@yahoo.com

I remember a movie I saw a couple years ago, that's from the mid-80s I think. In one scene, a little bushman had a tiny bow, probly something like 6" long, that shot a little dart that knocked the bad guys out. Don't remember the name. It was a bushman name.

There's a place over in Jackson called the Black Knight Bowbenders. They have a huge outdoor range, but I wanna be able to wander the woods at will. www.blackknightbowbenders.com

don't know if it's the same where you live but here state land is adequate for that...just obviously check your back drop

If anybody wants to know more about the little bows used by the bushmen, do a Google search on "bushmen" "bows" and you will see some photos and detailed information. WARNING: Some of the photos may not be suitable for viewing by children. These bushmen are men, naked men.

'Naked' and 'men' should never be used in association with each other. Where I live, we don't have the open space to shoot in the open, and people would call the police, even if I was doing it legally. I don't even have the bow yet, so...

Where in Jersey are you??? I'm a complet novice but there is some places within a short drive of NYC where one could go, Email me if you ever want to get together.

I'm in the southern section, town called Bayville. About 10 miles from Seaside Heights or Point Pleasant Beach. When I lived up north, it wasn't an issue. People liked that kind of stuff. Down here? Nope.

There is also several indoor range in the ny area, not the same but g.e. for practice, probably in your area as well.

probably could get away with it on the beach in the off season, plenty o room, could shhot towards the water, and if you miss the waves will bring the arrows in. in some parts it on the shore it's comlee ghost town during the winter.
