Bows in Wilderness

santa cruz has a really nice outdoor range... it's run by the santa cruz archers.... there is also a few really nice ranges within an hours drive from here..... most of the clubs put on 3-d shoots on a regular basis.... they're a blast.... my 9 y.o. old brings home a trohy every time....:o i also have a couple of spots that i hunt on locally....:D

Shooting on the beach is a major no no. It's right by the street and the houses, and I think there's a minimum distance of 400' to discharge any sort of projectile weapon. By the ocean...maybe. But it's quite a pain in the neck getting there often.

I remember a movie I saw a couple years ago, that's from the mid-80s I think. In one scene, a little bushman had a tiny bow, probly something like 6" long, that shot a little dart that knocked the bad guys out. Don't remember the name. It was a bushman name.

You may be thinking of The Gods Must Be Crazy, a funny slapstick comedy from Africa that got some play in the US back in the 80s. I doubt there's much reality associated with the teeny bow used to tranquilize the bad guys. But there are a couple scenes of the main character using a normal bushman bow to hunt.

YES!! That's it!! I knew it was BS, but it was still entertaining, and that's the only part I saw. Thanks.:p

I sold all my longbows but one, which is 47#@28", but I rarely shoot it. Sold them because I injured my shoulder (non archery related) and couldn't shoot them anymore. I keep the old bamboo bow around for sentimental reasons.

Right now, my one and only roving and hunting bow is a 51#@28" recurve that's 60" long. The shoulders still ache, but this bow is easy on them and I'm accurate with it.

Either my reflex Excursion 70 lbs or my Hoyt Gamemaster II 50lbs. I spent yesterday dailing in my compound due to new peep eliminator rear sights. 20, 30 and 40 yards are sighted in and man what a bow!

"The Gods Must Be Crazy" is the movie you're thinking of. . . It's hilarious, one of my all time favorites. I just checked it out of the library and watched it last week. The little tiny bow he used was just a gimick for the movie I think, but the other bow that he used was pretty tiny too, and he used the same "sleeping potion" on the arrows for hunting that he used to take out the bad guys at the end.

Edit. . . I posted this before I realized that there was a second page to the thread. Sorry for the repeat of Shecky's response.

I have been a bowyer for something like 25 years. I really don't know how many bows I have, but there are about 20 bows that I switch around and shoot regular. In order of shooting preference:
American semi-longbow
Long-flat bow, Have quite a few of these.
Long self bow, A few of these.
Static Recurve
Short D-bow
Modern recurve
Penobscott Bow
A hybrid Japanese inspired long bow made with modern material.

Ever sell any of your stuff? I'm trying to find something a bit cheaper than the Chek-Mate, but all the production line bows are made, essentially, to fit someone else. I have a 31" draw length; most bows don't like being pulled that far.

I'll work on the pics when I have some light. My picture skills are laging way behind my bowyery.
I shoot at the Bear state, (Escondido) and San Diego Archers Ranges occasionally. Don't have much patience for wheel bow shooters, and I don't require a fancy rang to shoot, But a Traditional Shoot sounds good.

it is a lot of fun... you should try and make it next year... lots of cool bowyers and folks flint-knapping and making self-bows all weekend...

there are a few other really cool weekend long shootswe attend too.... one outside of fresno and one in petaluma...

Here's what I shoot. It's a Black Widow recurve with bamboo limbs. It's pulls about 70#'s at 30". It seems to shoot aluminum better than carbon. I have not tried cedar or laminated birch shafts yet. The bow is fairly light and maneuverable, but BW makes other bows better suited for those purposes. I got this one because it's accurate and shoots a heavy arrow hard and fast. BW is also a fine company to do business with. I also have an old Hoyt Provantage Rocket, but everytime I shoot that clunker I have to find and reattach some piece that sprung off. The less moving parts, the better IMHO.

My beautiful range got closed down.:thumbdn: :grumpy:

Hear hear. I don't like Black Widows, simply because of the price. I can't justify spending that much on a bow, when someone else will make me something just as good for half the price. That being said, I'd still grab one if I found one for a reasonable price. :D I only have carbon arrows. I want to try some wooden ones, but I don't have the skills to make them or the money to buy them.

This is my living room wall. Have more Bows in a closet, and a work shop with bows/arrows in every corner. There are 250 arrows in my living room, each made for a specific bow. Every piece of equipment was made by me.

The Gene Foster shoot still happening then. Havn't been in years, so maybe it's time I started shooting a bit more so I don't shame myself.:D

Mike, great hearing about the Santa Cruz range! Also, what time of year is the Petaluma shoot?
