whats wrong with 1095cv? *yawn*

Now, go find out what's new in the choppy stuff!

Hmmm. I haven't been blown away by the performance of my D2 blades. Maybe I need to try them again before I decide what my reaction should be to this news.

cjr7,

Will you please describe the experience you've had with D2.

I've heard D2 isn't the most user friendly for sharpening:confused: Of course I've also been told that if it's been HT'ed well then it will hold it's edge for a long time...IDK
I don't even have a regular 14 yet so I have to worry about that first.

Sure. Probably way too much info, but here it goes...
A couple years ago I bought 2 benchmades in D2 for hunting use. One big folder for field use and one fixed blade for cutting up the meat after I get it home. I have now skinned and processed 4 deer and 1 turkey with these blades. In my opinion both knifes become just as dull after 1 deer as any other blade I've used for this task. So I haven't perceive any great advantage in edge retention in my use. Also, the 1st time I used the big folder it quickly developed rust that pitted. Here's how it happened. I skinned out the deer. Washed it off in the creek, dried it on my shirt, and took it home. After approx 1 hour drive home I washed it with soap and water and dried it with paper towels. Lightly sprayed and wiped it down with some rem oil and left it open sitting on my dresser. This is a normal routine for me. That evening after I had the deer cut up with the other knife and packed in the freezer I went to put away the folder. Corrosion spots all over it. I was pretty upset about it because those knives are rather expensive. That being said, I have not had corrosion issues with the fixed blade. However, after cutting lots of meat recently with my BK15 I can't say that the D2 fixed blade I have is any better at holding an edge over the 15's 1095. I don't want to completely write off D2, but that is my experience and opinion on it thus far.

This sounds a lot like my experience with Aus 8

Sounds cool to me. If they offer them at a decent price I might try one. I have never had any D2 and could try it out.

S30V would be more exciting, but I have faith. If Ethan chose it and Tooj makes it how bad can it be?

I dunno if the knife supply company that I got this definition is a sponsor of BF or not, so I prob shouldnt name them, but here is an excerpt from their blade steel page:

D-2 : An excellent air hardened, cold worked tool steel. It has increased carbon and chromium over A-2, which results in very high wear resistance. For a tool steel, it has very good corrosion resistance. D-2 is often referred to as a semi-stainless, due to its high chromium content and very good corrosion resistance. D-2 is much tougher than the premium stainless steel, including ATS-34 and 154CM. But, it can be difficult to grind, due to its tendency to work harden easily. It also will not take a mirror polish, due to its ‘orange peel’ appearance.

I wouldn't worry too much about D2. It's a great steel IMO. There's a reason why Bob Dozier likes it a lot. ;)

Yup ill get one. for a small woods blade d2 is great. its too hard for a bigger do all blade but it holds an edge for a very long time and gets toothy the way I like a woods edge. little more sharpening prowess is needed but with through systems on today market sharpening is a no brainer

For me, a 14 in D2 will be one of those if-I-have-the-extra-money-and-nothing-better-to-spend-it-on kind of knives. It's cool, but just doesn't blow my kilt up, ya know?!

cjr7,

Thanks for the thorough reply. I appreciate it! D2 seems to be one of those like it/dislike it metals based on several (not a scientific study) comments I've read. I read a comment somewhere by a hunter who said he sold his D2 knife and bought two 1095 knives. His complaints were that the blade required far too much effort to sharpen and that its reputation to prevent rust was over-rated.
