Bring It: TNT vs. Sebenza

Sniff, sniff, Russ, that was beautiful man, just beautiful sniff, sniff

To quote an early 90's icon:

"Could'nt we just all get along?"

Sebenza is a great knife. Its a production.

TNT is a GREAT knife, its a custom. You want different holes, ya got them, ya want a different sized handle ya got it, ya want a smooth handle, ya got it, ya want no holes, ya got it...... Come on! Grow up people. Customs cost more than "production" knives and that what sebenza's are: "production". You are paying for a man who has 20 years of knifemaking experience. You are paying for stellite which costs justs as much, dollar for dollar, as most damascus. Have you ever seen the price of a Jess Horn knife? How about a Lake? Come on! Mayo may not be in that "league" with some people, but for me and others (Russ, ya bastid!) he is right up there!

Buy a Sebenza, its a great knife. No bones!

Ya wanna get offa the bench and see what eveyone else is talking about, get a TNT. Put your money where your mouth is and if you don't like it someone will buy it from you quick! The TNT is one of the best customs around and Mayo is, IMHO one of the best makers. Quality is quality and f'ing "a", Mayo is right up there! Frick, I'm tired of this whining! Buy one and then complain. You won't! There is nothing to complain about. Like Russ stated, I went through a lot of knives and there just does not seem to be anything I can find wrong with the TNT, except that Russ got the dang-blasted #13 of the 20th anniversary series!

Come on! If this was a heavyweight fight its over. TNT winner by a knockout. Next?????????????????:p

They're already pretty damned high! I'll have to stick with my sub-standard Sebs for now...

:D

I didn't mean to sound hostile! I've had a large TNT on my wish list for about a year and a half! Anybody giving one away?

:)

I think ultimately even TNT users can appreciate the value of a Seb, especially when one can pick up a small around the forums for about $265.00 on average. However, there's no doubt in my mind that the TNT's a fine, fine folder at its pricepoint.

The Seb (small) is about as expensive a folder as I will allow myself to carry and use daily. IMHO, it's the best value-at-pricepoint going. Mine gets used hard, and earns its keep to be sure.

Professor

One reason I've kept my Sebenza in spite of being bitten hard by the custom bug is that it's replaceable if lost. Yes, it would hurt. But not like a more expensive, unique, waited-for-a-year, custom.

The Sebenza provides, IMO, comparable quality to many of the better customs, at a pretty nice price-point. It just doesn't have the panache, again IMO. It doesn't get as much pocket time as my TNT, but when it does I enjoy it and am very glad to own it.

I can't figure out why "sub-standard" came into this thread.

I believe "sub-standard" was meant as a joke. I certainly did.
I have no doubt about the quality of the TnT and Tom's work. That's why it's on my wish list.
However, I still stand behind my statement about most customs not coming close to the Sebenza. The Sebenza IS custom quality, and yes, it has soul.

Paul

I brought "sub-standard" into it, and it was indeed meant as a joke. I had to make sure my small Seb. was outta the room when I typed as not to hurt its feelings!

For many many years I wore a Seiko on my wrist. It kept GREAT time, and I never worried about it, not once. Then I got another, and another....

Then I turned 50, then 51, etc....and I began to realize more of my life was behind me than ahead of me......and that I could make more money, but never buy another second. So yesterday I got an Omega GMT in the mail; I dont want a Rolex, been there......I LOVE my new watch!!! :):):)

Tom, you just added a whole new dimension to my ability to rationalize buying the good stuff that I enjoy. You rock!

So I can only justify a Tag F1 Chrono and Seb's at this point in my life! Your outlook gives me something to look forward to, however. Now if only my wife will buy into that rationale...

:)

Well! This thread has been hot while I was at work. Thanks Paul and RL:D.

Back when I used to be really into sebbies, I used to post on most of the threads that were of this vein.Guess which side I was on:D

People tend to be passionate when they feel strongly about something. Quite often, you find yourself defending what you believe and why.

I am fine with everyone having their own "favorite" or "best" folder.I used to read "wait 'til you handle one" or wait 'til you own one" in the threads defending sebbies. Generally, you can remove "sebbie" and replace it with your folder of choice, and I'm sure many of you have seen similiar threads. Everyone has their own reasons they deem a folder to be the "ultimate", or "best", or, what have you. This is fine. This is the way it should be. This place would be awfully dull without the wide variance of opinions here that make for pleasant discourse.

I suppose the reason I am fine with everyone having their own opinions, sometimes expressed rather fervently:D is that I am no longer searching. I have found my perfect folder. As such, I am confident that many others will eventually feel the same way. Many others will not. Fine. The TNT speaks for itself. To harken back to innumerable sebenza threads, "wait'll you handle one":D

I am at peace.I have reached the end of my quest and am quite satisfied with my destination. I have attained my "Moment of Zen".

Enlightenment is a joyous thing.:p :D  :D :p

Well said Russ. I feel the same way about the Sebenza. I can't imagine liking another knife more. That doesn't mean I won't buy others. It would kinda suck if I couldn't find something different from time to time. I will admit that it is getting harder to find ohers that I like.

Paul

Russ,

I certainly hope you never find an EDC that you like better that a Mayo TNT. I've heard that having large amounts of ink removed can really ruin one's "Moment of ZEN"....

Nice discussion. These are two of the three things that are on my wish list. I have all of the knives that I need (six of them) and really shouldn't spend anymore money, but I can't get the vision of pineapples, coconuts and grass skirts out of my mind. Does anyone know what this means? How I long for the days when a Ka-Bar and Swiss Army Knife was all that I knew.

BTW Hoss, I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAID!!!:D  :D

C4, ...BwahahahaROTF! That is one of the reasons I am THE ZEALOT:D:D
I DO tend to be zealous about what I believe in:D.

Guess that tells eveyone how strongly I feel about TNT's!!!

You sebbie guys... you got ink? :p

Well, I wish I could give an educated opinion on the subject of TNT vs. Sebenza (sounds like a Pay-per-View fight doesn't it?)...but alas, I don't have a TNT... :(

EXCEPT, I just pulled the trigger today and ordered my very first custom knife--you guessed it--a TNT from Tom! :D Yahoo!

I promise I'll try to remain objective in giving my opinion; after my anticipated long wait for the TNT!

Ron,

The heck with the long wait. Why don't you catch Tom in Vegas next month? It's not really that far from your coast... and you get to play (with the different sizes) before you pay! (Please don't ever tell Tom that I let on, ... but he has been known to trade for guns and watches... )
