Photos BRK 3V Rust/Patina - Is this normal?

Post a picture, then we can give you a better answer. Almost all of my 3v knives behave almost like stainless (in terms of corrosion), except my white river in 3v. It has mild discoloration because I cut acidic foods and didn't clean it after.
Hi Wulfns,

It was difficult to get a picture that shows what I see! I will upload a few and see how they go.

I cleaned off the marks to nearly invisible twice but within a day you can see the main ones darken up again.

CPM3V is listed as 7.5% chromium, meaning it is not considered a stainless steel. (I looked because I've had a couple of 3V blades show light staining.). The hate for BRK&T runs strong on this site, and people are quick to make claims/accusations that the steel is not as labeled. (Yes, that has happened; but that doesn't automatically mean it is a common or ongoing issue)

I can't speak for others, I know I'm not hating on Bark River. I love the knife, I've gone to extreme lengths to get this thing and it carves wood like a dream. If I was going to spend another large sum of cash on a blade (which I just might) it would probably be another Bark River. And that's despite the issues.

No hate, just to state the facts, from my purchasing experience both knives I chose had to be returned to the factory so 2 out of 2 QC issues is pretty $%&^ however I'm still on board. So NO hate at all! No accusations of wrong steel either. None. Period. I don't believe that is the issue.

I just am reading threads accross the internet where 95% or more don't get any persistent stains on their 3V knives, even after years of use. I'm wanting to find out what has happened with the people whose knives did stain or get a patina effect. What was their solution? What was the cause of the problem? Is it even a problem? Could it be an unlucky heat treat/too hot on the wheels?

There's no hate in it, I just want to solve my problem.... without paying $70 Au to send it back to factory where it has already been sent back to once before (for protruding tang and pins).

The grind is good on this one though. It's a beast and I have not really been able to go and unleash it and use it freely because I need to know what is appropriate use for it. I live near the coast and humidity is up at 80% sometimes in summer.

If OP does not comment and I can't solve it then I may... use it more and see how bad it gets. Maybe contact Bark River then.

Yeah for me part of the problem is being overseas too. Although my Dad is from Michigan so feel even more connected to Bark River as my family herritage is just a cross the lake.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Hope this is helpful for someone else who has this question in future too.

I've had some light staining on a Bark River with 3V; but nothing more than I've gotten on CruWear (same chromium content). I also got comparable staining on a 3V Bradford. I don't remember the staining worsening on any of those knives.
Another 3V Bark River didn't go beyond a few pepper spots.
Why worry about staining unless the knife is a show piece? Just get your money's worth out if it by using it

I'm not sure I still have THAT Bradford - I'll take a look and try to get some pictures of the knives I mentioned later this morning.

I'm based in Australia and made knives in 3V I've found it develops light surface oxidation from moisture in trapped in leather sheaths from the humidity also if washed and not completely dried and had a light coating of wd40 or something applied need to make sure you don't touch it with your fingers though between drying and appling wd40 as that can cause discolouration. If storing for a prolonged period of time store it out of the sheath. The discolouration won't affect its performance.
