I also received the same email this morning and was surprised. I have one of the original Black and Gold Bodegas, the original model Bodega prior to the Field Grade Bodega models.
Whats so surprising is that a few months ago I had to send my knife to them because I screwed up my lock bar. (Dont want to get into that right now, my bad)
Anyway they made me a new Lock Bar but told me that they couldnt guarantee a match to the original black color lock bar. They had done one other knife with the gold crushed ice finish but need to confirm with the other owner if he minded they did another one for me. As it turned out they were able to anodize mine in gold with the crushed ice finish; I believe mine is 1 of 2 original Black & Gold Bodegas with this gold lock bar. Apparently Begg Knives liked the looks so much they decided to make a Field Grade Black and Gold Bodega; very nice at a more affordable price.
Only thing I don't like is the Cerakote... good for a safe queen but I think boron carbide is much more handsome especially with carbon fiber and it holds up to use well. Would have been nice to see a better coating on a $2400+ knife.
Not quite that expensive but not cheap either. Just under $1300. Still, your point is valid...

You'll pay $2000 or more for Todd's first generation Bodega's. They are titanium sides with carbon fiber overlay. Those knives were made when Todd was living in Washington State and were mainly responsible for gaining the attention he received. Soon after he enlisted the help from his two brothers and moved his operation to California. He considers the 1st generation Bodega's DNC (darn near Custom). To hold down cost and increase production to meet demand, they began producing what they call the Field Grade Bodega's, and was able to lower the cost of production and overall cost to consumers. The quality of both models is excellent, but I carry my Field Grade occasionally and my original Begg's Bodega seldom leaves home.
I believe the original version (ti Bodega) of the Black and Gold had a different coating. Not sure if it was Boron Carbide.
Yes, but he was talking about this knife in perticular, which is the Field Grade version of the Black and Gold bodega, and sells right now (or pre-sales, depending on how you look at it) for just under $1300 new from Begg's website.
Yes I know he was talking about the Field Grade Black & Gold Bodega. As I said in my first sentence, you will pay $2k for the first generation Bodega's; that is what I had to pay for my 1st Gen Black and Gold. I paid $1000 for my Field Grade, so $1300 for the Black & Gold Field Grade is in the ball park.
It's alright to be apprehensive especially when paying so much for a knife, but those G10 handles on the Field Grade are very robust. The field Grade being lighter is a better EDC than the 1st Gen all Ti, however it’s still a big knife.

Sorry I misundrstood.
I will have to look at them more seriously. I'm not worried about larger knives as much really. I carry a Shirogorov 95T most days, and while slimmer than the Bodega, it's about the same blade length and it fits me perfectly. The only other thing I hesitate on the Field Grade about is not being able to get the cracked ice finish on the hardware, but I guess for daily use that's not really a bad thing I guess. The stonewash will hide wear better.
Thanks for the opinion. It helps put some of my reservations about the Field Grade to rest

So, perhaps a touch nicer than the standard G10 FG Bodega."Features a Cerakote fluted blade and a carbon fiber handle that has been given our scallop pattern for added grip. Jeweled ice finish on gold anodized 6AL4V titanium lock, back spacer, and clip. Includes IKBS with ceramic ball bearings."

FWIW, the handles on this particular model are not G10, but are Carbon Fiber.

Yeah I noticed the CF. It's a very nice upgrade, but the star of this model has to be that gold Ti. You can get the Field grade with CF as well with the stadard stonewashed Ti, but this blows that out of the water.
I would probably grab the G10 model to carry everyday though personally. I don't really see a huge advantage in the CF over the G10 for the price, with the exception of the Black and Gold.
I don't disagree, especially the part about the star of the knife being the gold Ti. But I have a strong personal preference to CF over G10, so that also makes a big difference to me. Love CF - the look, the feel, the whole package. Given a choice on a knife, I'll take CF every time. That said, I do recognize that as a personal preference and understand that opinions will vary on that subject.
Gotcha.
BTW, very nice knife! Is that a Diskin Fire? I've only seen one, so could be wrong, but it was a very fine knife. Love the lines.

Also - for anyone else reading this thread, note that the B&G Bodegas we are discussing here are now showing "Sold Out" on Todd's web site.
