Broke my Ka-Bar... need a replacement camp knife.

Here's different approach, since you like axes but not the wight try a hawk. There tow good makers on here, Cole creek forge&Kentucky Cole creeks are more expensive but are amazing looking and proform as good as they look, and in your price range. Kentucky makes a grate user hawk that's well below your stated price and they are rock solid. You can find both on the for sale sub forum under custom fixed blade's in the makers section. Good luck with your new knife

In your price range how about Scrap Yard Dogfather, Yard Guard or Becker BK-7. For something a tad shorter, the Scrapper5 is awesome.

Man, some of these knives are really nice. One thing I tend to shy away from is a big finger choil on my knife... but some of the pics on the previous page are making me rethink that.

For those of you wondering, I broke the Ka-Bar by batoning through a small knot. It wasn't even a big or even thick piece of wood. The knot was nothing huge either. I'm very unimpressed with the Ka-Bar USMC at this point because of that.

I still can't decide what I want. Why is this so hard? I was just browsing SMKW and got distracted and ended up ordering a few Mora's, though! Haha.

Well, to be fair, that knife is designed for fighting not batonning. That said, I've used mine hard (ok - mine is an old Camilus but practically the same knife) for decades with no issues whatsoever.

Anyway - check out the Beckers. I think you'll like them.

I've beaten on my Ka-Bar pretty hard with no issues, but I've heard of others breaking exactly like the OP described. Only thing ever broke on mine was the very tip, and that's cause I was being stoopid. Could be a QC issue, could be divine providence. Anyway, get the BK-7. You won't be disappointed.

NothingCoherant,

Please send your broken USMC F/U knife back to KA-BAR. We will inspect it. If there is no blatant or obvious abuse, it will be replaced under warranty. (We are pretty liberal with what constitutes abuse)

Wow. You guys are awesome. I'll be doing this as soon as I get home from school tonight!

Man, I'm glad I got into knives as a hobby. So many cool people and companies out there.

Way to go Tooj. Man you guys are stellar. I have broken 3 Kabars in the same way. It did take about 8 yrs to get all of them broke though. I never once thought of it as a design flaw though. Granted the 90 degree angle where the tang meets the blade is the culprit, but all 3 of mine took some hella abuse before they let go. The last one was kinda funny, on a Friday, I went by SMKW and picked up 2 Kabars, one for me and my friend (never owned one). The next night, I was splitting some Oak to go in my stove, and it let loose, the blade flew out of the wood forward, hit the wall, and bounced. It ended up in my left thigh, about 4" above the knee. I was kneeling. I just kinda looked at it for a minute, pulled it out, clapped a hand over the hole, and limped off to the Aid station (bathroom). Once I was patched, I collected the pieces, got my new Kabar and finished the wood for the stove. The Kabar in question had batoned every piece of wood that I put in my stove for 3 winters. I figured, it found out I got a new Kabar, felt it was time to retire, and wanted to make sure it would never be forgotten. God I love Kabars. Beckers. ESEEs. Moose

Toooj,

Thanks for stepping up. I've owned 2 K-bars and never had an issue, but it's nice to know that you guys are there if the need arises. This is the way you win loyal customers.

Bravo!
