Broke my Kershaw 2420... need a replacement / suggestions

Yo, whats up. Just found the forum here as I was searching for some new pocket steel.

I don't know much about knife terminology, all I know is that my buddy broke my blade last week while he was using it to split tinder off some logs.

The aluminum on the back side of the handle broke right below the blade, and I am pretty sure that kershaw won't warranty that for me. The knife is useless now, just flops around when I thumb it open.

This was a gift, and it has been my only real knife for the past 8 years or so. Now I need to replace it.

Ive done a bit of research, seems CRKT blades are looked down on for their lower quality? Or maybe because they use AUS 8 steel? Not sure exactly what that means yet.

Ive seen a lot of people boasting Benchmade, Spyderco, and Kershaw.

I just want to find a new knife that will do everything my old one did, but I want this one to be more durable, tougher. I am willing to spend up to 300$ if its necessary to find something that will replace and surpass the abilities of my old Kershaw.

So far, I have found these, and I am just wondering how they compare to the Kershaw I had.

610 Rukus / debating on the mini. not sure if Connecticut state law is cool with the full size rukus hiding in my pocket without a permit.

From Kershaw, I was looking at the Storm II

I want something legal, durable, big, and ready to do what my old blade did and more.
Any and all suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

By the way, I live in lower Fairfield County in Ct. If there is a decent knife store around that anyone knows about, I wouldn't mind going to check out some of the locking systems just to see what I like.

Hey dude. I travel down to Old Saybrook and go to North Cove Outfitters. Are you famaliar with Old Saybrook? If you are and you know where the monkey farm is or the walmart plaza it's right inbetween. They have a good selection of knives and their prices are MSRP but I don't mind because the people there are awesome. Sounds like you'll probably want a fixed blade. Or, if not. I recommend a benchmade griptilian. Whats your price range?

You are going to overwhelemed with suggestions.

One of the big reasons I have moved away from CRKT is that they tend to run there steel way too soft. I didn't realize that until I started buying knives from other companies.

I'll just make suggestion from the what you have posted and say get a Leek. Though the Buck looks interesting I would bet it would be a little fat in your pocket.

well, im really looking for a folding blade i think, less than 300$. Not looking to stab myself or wear it on the outside of my clothes. Unless i can get a really secure good looking/durable/some-what compact sheath for a fixed blade, im pretty sure im going to go with a folding blade.

just looking up saybrook now... looks about 1 1/2 hours away from me here near stamford, ct.

you will be surprised with Kershaws Warranty department--they will replace the knife--that model isn't made anymore but they will give you something in the same price range--give them a call--you will be surprised:D

I was planning on calling them up and seeing what they tell me. I don't think I should throw in the part about using the knife to split tinder from logs, but I haven't totally thrown that idea out yet.

Glad to hear from someone that there might be some hope though.

Oh wow, stamford. Hmm. You're almost in NY lol. Well, anyways. Out of my knives, i would suggest a buck 110, a kershaw blur, a benchmade griptillian or a larger opinel. I love my old CRKT m16-03 but i havent bought one in 6 or so years. So i can't tell you if they went downhill or not. You can post where you live lol none of us are going to show up on your doorstep. Just go to your local shop and look. Look for blade steels such as 154cm, s30v, 440 steels or the lower AUS8. Those are good steels to have in a blade. Then youll want to figure out what kind of blade design you like, whether you want it to be a folder or a fixed blade, handle material etc. After you get over the blade material its pretty much the design of the knife youre looking at.

Yea Im in the stamford area, just figured id broaden it a bit since people might know fairfield better than stamford or have heard of it at least.

I was thinking maybe walmart might be a decent place to check out first since im guessing they probably have a wide selection just to look at and test out locking mechanisms in person.

I don't think we actually have an official knife store around here. Even the sporting good stores that I know of.. not really sure if they have a knife selection at all.

Is S30V > 154cm > AUS8?

I have always been impressed with my Kershaw 1470BLK. It is not an assisted opening and doesn't have flippers but it opens easily with either hand, is nice and slim, very secure in the hand thanks to the Trac-Tec inserts and a great blade steel...Sandvik 13C26.

Yes, thats how the steels go that i mentioned. I'm not crazy about walmart for knives. I say if you really want a good knife, unless someone else knows a better store, travel down here. It's a full on outdoors store. Theres cabelas in east hartford, cubetas in middlefield, new england outfitters in wallingford but idr if they have knives or not. Good luck! I get all my archery stuff at new england outfitters. Been buying there for years if you do archery!

They maintain a pretty active forum presence, and even have their own sub forum. I wouldnt be surprised if one of the forum reps chimes in or contacts you. I would definitely call them and tell them the story. Either way, you now have an excuse to grab a new bomb proof user. If you like your kershaw check out their ZT line. They have good reviews and are serious eye candy to boot.

I took a brief look at some of the ZT products last night while I was at work. Nightshift grinder checkin in.

Didn't much like the look of all the black powdered blades. Ive seen a couple of the black blades up close, they always seem like they are just waiting to be scratched to reveal their silver finish underneath.

If black steel existed, id be down, but that powder stuff just turns me off to the whole idea.

or wait a second... carbon fiber is naturally black isn't it?

Nah, black finishes i've had on my knives take a lot to wear em out. I had used one of my benchmades with a black coating to open up battery acid for my motorcycle battery, then after used it to cut the top off a superglue thing. Both the acid and superglue did nothing to it. Only after i started scraping the superglue off with a razor did it do something.

Short of using a grinder I doubt you'd expose any of the steel on the ZT knives. They have a very tough finish.

Then I recommend a Kershaw Junkyard Dog II, more specifically the Composite Blade model.

Super tough, cool looking, awesome steel(s), amazing flipper.

I use to have that same knife a long time ago when they first came out, and it was a great knife. Try the Leek; it doesn't cost much and if you don't like it they're a fairly easy knife to sale. I think you want care about parting with it once you've tried it.

Great suggestion. I just picked one up the other day and I'm highly impressed. Definitely meets the durable, big, and ready criteria too.

The DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) finish on the ZT's is plenty tough. What appears as a scratch on the blade is actually where the material cut has been worn by the finish! I use Windex to wipe it off and the black finish remains black. The Rukus you show is a heck of a knife and a definate heavy duty one. Even the mini is actually a MINI, meaning that it is a large knife in it's own right. The Axis lock is one of the strongest around.

Btw, I would go ahead and tell Kershaw the entire truth on how the knife was broken..........anything else is simply bad karma.

Ah crap. karma. ok, i won't tell them anything but the truth.

Going to give them a call now and see how it goes.

Thanks a lot dudes. I appreciate all the suggestions so far.

Wow. Just got off the phone with Morgan from Kershaw warranty services.

She was so amazingly helpful. I told her the situation, and she basically said: 'Send it in, write a note telling us what happened and which knife you'd like somewhere in the same price range up to around $80'.

She suggested the Whirlwind and the 3120, and we briefly talked about the Leek and a couple other knives on there.

So I guess I have to get on there and find a nice new Kershaw to replace my old steel.

Man, she was so freakin friendly. Kershaw is awesome.
