broke the Wakizashi in HT... WHY?!

First, get a power hammer or press, then you can forge down almost anything to the size you want :)

1050 would be my choice, for a water quench sword blade. The lest likely to crack and still good hamon activity.

*grins* powr hammer?
but then i wouldnt have these beefy arms! i am going to do the 1 1/4 stock by hand... but i dont want to waste it.
hehe
thanks!

Hi Folks,
I have a book printed in 1968 on heat treating called "Tool Steel SImplified", published by The Carpenter Steel Co. In the chapter about heat treating methods & equipment the author recommends using a brine soution of about 3/4 lb. rock salt to a gallon of water (between 5 & 10 % salt) to quench water-hardening steels. This reduces steam pockets for a much more even quench. More salt will only slow down the quench. It should be used between 60 and 90 degrees F. I use this method with good results. It's safer than just water.
