So who here has broken a knife in the woods/wilds.....
I have never broken more than the first 1/32" of a Spyderco Ronin putting it back in its sheath (very very thin tip). But other than that I have not had any snapping. This was brought on by the "How thick is thick enough" thread as sometimes to me it seems that others are too concerned about breakage.
I want real world snappage stories please!

whittling with a cheap chinese SAK a few years ago i snapped the blade clean in half making a hard cut in some semi-cured maple.

that's the only case though...

I broke a mora once, no kidding. I was prying something apart at work, the housing of a busted Stihl chop saw. That mora snapped like a twig...also about 1/32 of an inch from the tip.

Then I stuck it in the housing again and finished prying the thing apart. I still have the knife, and other than probably not stabbing as well any more, I can't tell any difference.

I broke the tip off a mora (red, wood handle) while making an hole for a fire bow set-up. instead if sending it back, I just re-profiled it.

I broke a few cheapies when I was a kid. I also broke the tips off of a Spydie Endura and a BM mini AFCK, but they were very thin tipped and I was kinda, sorta prying with them.

I have broken my share of knives. I broke two or three Ka-Bars in Viet Nam. I broke an Al Mar chopper clearing brush. I broke a brand new knife recently, doing something stupid with it (prying). The ka-Bars broke on sand filled ammo boxes while I was perfecting my throwing technique. Only a few broke when I was using them for their intended purpose.

I've had a lot of sak knock-offs completely fall apart until I baught the real deal

Cheap SAK knockoff, dropped it with the blade open and it snapped the blade clean off. Also a Cold Steel kukri machete, broke the blade while chopping some hardwood.

I broke a gerber gator once while trying to cut some 1" rope. The spring snapped but i think that was due to a bad heat treat. I have also broken my fair share of " survivial knives" as a kid.

snapped the tip of a kershaw Neads Work while prying, i just re-profiled the tip and it is still in the EDC line up

Dan Busse told us once, one of the reasons Jerry and he started the whole shebang is because when they were young, they broke a lot of blades and were not to thrilled with the QC and warranties of many companies. They sure showed them!

I broke a Buck Special in half (center of the blade, not at handle) while battoning some fire wood. My son broke the 1/2" end out of a buck 110 carving his girl frends name (now his wife) in a tree in Canada. Buck replaced both knives. I had a Gerber locking folder break it's spring, now it's a flopper. I have had several SAK (not Victornox) fall apart. I have another lock back buck ranger missing the 1/2" end, but I do not remember how it happened.
Ron Athay

i had forgot until ron athay reminded me;
i broke a cheap mystery stainless fishing knife batonning a fresh maple log about an inch smaller in diameter than the blade length...a stupid move, because i was trying to see how much abuse the knife would take. it was a very sturdy knife for the five dollars it cost, and get pretty sharp. i hit a knot and the blade just snapped.

The only time I ever broke a knife in the woods was when I was throwing one as a kid.

I broke a few , its why I have a serious downer on stainless knifes now , I was digging bardie grubs out of a root when the handle of a stainless fixed blade snapped and somehow I ended up with a nasty cut from the broken end of the knife in the palm of my hand , I still feel it 20+ years later even tho there is no scar , it had been drilled out in the handle area and the tang snapped at one of the bigger holes .

I have broke the tips of a few knives digging grubs out of wood or opening oysters the hard way ( easy way is just sit them near the fire and they open themselves ) or parting critter joints but being clumsy doing it .

I snapped a BuckMaster where the blade joined the handle, Buck replaced it saying ti was a defective blade (I never found out, I sold the replacement). Snapped a couple of Victorinox SAKs doing stupid stuff with them, mostly prying. And broke a couple of cheapy "liner lock blades", including a Old Timer Beast.

Since I always carry atleast two, with the exception of the BuckMaster, it never really mattered. With the Buck it happened when I was injured on the trail, and really needed to depend on it. (Thanks Murphy, you rock :/ )
