Brother Knives

Alan, if you go with white bone, you may be inspired to take up the art of scrimshaw!:thumbsup::cool:
I also prefer the shape of the bareheaded bone frame over that of the endcapped carbon fiber frame.

Scrimshaw? As my mom used to say "I couldn't draw a straight line with a ruler."

I’ve had four different Brothers knives, and I agree that they were all well made. I’ve moved all of them along except this one. Gary 5K Qs 5K Qs was kind enough to send me a scrimshaw kit and an awesome white bone Marlinspike last summer. There is no way I’m going to try my hand at scrimshaw for the first time on that knife, but this one seems like a good candidate. Not that I WANT to trash this knife, it’s just I won’t be too upset if I do. 😊BFD1D759-E6E7-4484-BF89-1DB59461A77C.jpeg

Good to hear that you're still considering giving scrimshaw a try, Todd.:cool::thumbsup:
That white bone Brother looks like a good "canvas" for your art, but you might even consider some practice attempts before you get to the Brother. You can pick up a white bone RR for low cost, or I wonder if a package of bone "dog chews" would be good "scrimshaw scratch paper"?? 🤓

@Railsplitter Rat tail bolster and pinchability looks like the 1509 Rick. I prefer the crescent nail nick. It's time to decide.View attachment 1714035View attachment 1714034
Believe you made the Right Choice there Alan

Rat-Tail and Barehead? No contest in my book. Not only this, but White Bone has super ageing qualities (unlike most of us...) and takes on a rich colour with carry.

Top way to start the year I'd say

Regards, Will

Yep, I’m going to do it, just not sure when, but when I do I think I’ll go with the RR instead of the dog bone! 🤣

Thanks Will. I sure hope it ages better than I am. Last year or two has been tough. It'll look ok just won't function as well as intended. I may try my hand at a scrimshaw design. Just got my shipping notice and it's scheduled for delivery tomorrow. That's a day early.

I just received the white bone lockback #1509. My impression as I opened the package was as follows. It’s a nice thick cardboard box upon opening I pull out a nice canvas drawstring pouch. I pull out the knife hoping for a white bone but I see a more yellowish example. More on that. The knife itself has excellent f&f with very smooth transitions. It has a light pull (immaterial in a lockback) but locks up with a satisfying click with no play in any direction. It is sharp and is well centered. It has an easy release with a nice closing walk with more of a soft thud than a snap. It reminds me of the Bladeforums Viper of 2019 that way. I love the closed size of 3 3/4” with a handsome (can a blade be handsome?) clip point blade. Now back to the coloration. As you can see from the photos it’s not as yellow as I first thought and is actually quite satisfying.E6947E41-0E7F-42D0-956F-A5645EEF55BD.jpegF3413A44-1E0E-4484-A503-9EEC34EED10D.jpeg

I just got the Zulu Spear in green canvas. It is a very nice knife with the exception of the half stop. It's not really halfway, more like 1/3 open. Anyway when closing, the blade almost snaps past the mid-stop from the inertia the tight spring creates. Also, the initial pull on open is a nice 6ish, but past the mid-stop it cranks up to around 7-8. The backspring is perfectly flush at open and just a hair low at mid and closed positions. The blade is shaving sharp and centered. The nail nick is very shallow, but the blade is pinchable so it's not a big concern to me. The liner edges are sharp. Too sharp if you ask me. I will at some point knock the edge off with something.
