Brown G10 Stretch 2

Wow, I had been interested in this one when I first heard of it. I had forgotten about it until I saw this thread, then I saw the $200 price. Wow, I never thought I would say this but I will spend $20 more and get another BM 940-1. It's still appealing but I thought it would be a $150 knife at best.

Just give it time and the price will drop to where you might see more value. Interesting that you see so much more worth in the 940, though.

I will wait. Frankly I love the Stretch in FRN. I have three now and ,to me, the G10 makes it a PM2 wanna be at twice the price. I have a zdp 189 and like it but the VG-10 is my favorite.

Why?
That's apparently reserved for S110V.

So far, there has only been one S110v in blue and i know that another plastic model is on the way.

I'm talking about G10, I thought we all were.

If itis really resrved for S110v for models such as the PM2, Millie, G10 Manix well then good :) Not set in stone though after all, Native5 CF and green G10 models were in S110v.

Point is, dark blue FRN and G10 gets requested for everything on all these threads and in this case they insisted on doodoo brown.

The 940-1 is in S90v, polished textured CF, and made in USA. MAP is $260 which is imo too much, but if he is able to get it for $200, it definitely has good value compared to this upcoming Stretch. I got mine for $210 new and it's one of my favorite knives.

Weird price. You can get a titanium endura with vg-10/damascus for 150. I guess I'll keep my racing green zdp189, nylon stretch.

Yeah, similar recipe with the KW Yojimbo 2, and even lower cost... but not sure that's the point.
I like the 940, had an older 154cm version, but I don't compare it to a Stretch.
I too would like to see more midnight blue, but since Sal has pointed out it will be used for S110V, I figured people would be happy and not keep asking for it on other models for now (although I still often ask for more grey, lol) :)

I guess I can somewhat begin to understand this initial pricing set for the new Stretch, but maybe Spyderco has some clarifying to do because so many others here don't see it.

Spyderco does offer a LOT of great models with ZDP-189 for good prices, so maybe that skews some views... but what are some other brands offering knives with ZDP-189, and what sort of MSRP? Al-Mar and Rockstead? Anything else? Just wondering.

FRN Stretch in ZDP-189 is a slick lighweight knife, and I also have backups in VG-10 and the CF version. I will not pay more for a G10 Stretch than a PM2, but I definitely would like a slightly larger FRN model (thicker in the middle) if it doesn't get over 4 oz. I am still puzzled how the new G10 Stretch will weigh so much more than similarly slabbed versions like the CF---at 138 grams, its approaching the mass of a ZT0562, which is alot more stout of a knife.

Design wise they are quite different, yet they are two of my most favorite models from BM and Spyderco. Materials and cost, BM's pricing has gone up due to MAP enforcement and Spyderco's Japanese models are going up as well. I think you can find good value from both brands still. Personally, I think there is plenty in both models.

ZDP is still an ultra premium steel and is made in Japan which has a cost of living that easily rivals Ney York so the makers charge accordingly. With an open mind it's easy to see why they are priced that way, it's just a matter of who will be willing to pay for it. The (much anticipated) Worker for example, did not exactly break sales records. Love that Spyderco continues to offer ZDP and have heard that they will be coming out with other exotic Japanese steels in the near future, looking forward to those.

For $160 the Al Mar Eagle HD in DARK BLUE and ZDP is a fantastic knife and is probably made by the same maker Moki or Sakai as Japanese Spydies. I really like the Rockstead's I've seen but I don't bother, it's way out of my desired price range for a folder.

Not sure where you're getting 138 grams, as both the 2015 catalog and my scale put the weight of the G-10 Stretch 2 at 130 grams. That said, 130 grams seems a bit heavy compared to the CF/ZDP-189 and NG/damascus versions, even considering the increases in handle size and blade width. In fairness though, that's still a few grams lighter than my bolstered cocobolo Stretch, which has yet to cause my legs to give out when carried. I suspect those willing to void their warranty could shave a few grams off the liners without seriously compromising rigidity.

My mistake, I thought I read 138 in your review of the G10 Stretch sample. A bit off topic, but what did you mean about the CF weave being different on the US knives? I have a Stretch CF just like yours (it even has a "xxxV" serial number on it like yours) and I thought it was the same as every other Stretch CF.

Just like cloth, CF fibers can be woven in different patterns. The peel-ply CF used on the Stretch, and at least some other Japanese models, has what I'd describe as a herringbone pattern of elongated rectangles (think bricks). The peel-ply CF used on the CF Military, and at least some other US models, has what I'd describe as a checkerboard pattern of squares. I also find the Japanese peel-ply CF to have a somewhat less aggressive texture than US peel-ply CF. To me at least, that's a good thing, as I find the US version too abrasive for my taste.

Made in the USA, better steel, better lock, premium scales ..

Just my opinion though, not trying to derail the thread. My old FRN Stretch was a cutting machine but I'll pass on this one at $200.

I really like the look of the new model, but the price is just too much IMO...however, I am seriously thinking about getting an FRN Stretch in ZDP, I have never had a knife in that steel and I am interested to try it. I know that it is a royal PITA to sharpen by hand and it will rust at times but I don't plan on getting it wet (not a lot of rainfall in my office, I hope!) and ZDP is supposed to hold an edge for the better part of a decade. The green FRN is a nice color too, and if I need it sharpened I can take it to HOB or send it back to Golden. Might have to make a purchase soon...

Right now I'm down to that or the Bradley (the original folder in M4) for a new office EDC type folder.

I don't even really need a premium steel, I'd love just a good ole VG10/G10 version.

When I bought my Stretch ZDP-189 I invested in a few diamond sharpeners and never had any issues putting a fresh bevel on it. I found it held a working edge about 2-3 times longer than my old Native S30V with opening boxes, cutting rope/wire, etc.
When I got my Stretch CF from a pawnshop, the edge was convexed by the original owner and it performed even better at cutting. In addition, I found it had less chipping which I greatly appreciated. It is easy to maintain using a leather strop---I use a 1x42 leather belt on my belt sander.

Slightly off topic warning...

I have both the GB and FRN Stretch, and I must tell you the GB's materials and fit and finish is like comparing a Ferrari to a VW Golf... Pride of ownership goes to the GB without a doubt.

But I still love my Stretch because it's thin (both the handle and grind) and light and comfy.

I know you said that in an office environment rust is not an issue. However, few of us spend our entire lives at the office. So, if you're even slightly concerned about the possibility of ZDP-189 rusting, then M-4 might be a step in the wrong direction.
