Apologize if this is improper placement, but I killed a fiddleback last night at home, and wonder if I ought to call the exterminator, or just keep killing all that I see.

thanks a lot,
paul

Spiders aren't like cockroaches. Just get a few cans of the good stuff and make your attic, crawlspace and wherever an unwelcome environment. My opinion, YMMV

Was it in the house? If just one, not a big deal. I would spray if there were a bunch of them.

Was it outside? If so, no problem, they are wild animals and that's where they belong. There were lots of Brown Recluse spiders in Arkansas (as well as Back Widows, scorpions, tarantulas, snakes...) and they never caused a problem.

They like to live in wood piles and around junk, so if you have stuff like that clean it up and keep it well away from the house so your property won't be so inviting to them.

Good Luck,
-Bob

Wait until you see a bunch before worrying. I had a friend buy a house that was actually infested with them. They had to have someone come spray once a month for a very long time before they went away.

I'll defer to people that live with them all around but Brown recluses are nothing to screw around with. Nasty injuries and thier bite is initially usually painless. They inject a necrotic poison which desolves the flesh. Nasty, nasty injuries. Search the web for pictures if you want. They are not hard to find. The surgical repairs for this type of injury are almost as gruesome as the injury.

There was a program on the Discovery Channel or something of the sort in which a house was infested. The lady was bit several times, and they finally figured out that they were living in the darkest areas of the bedroom behind the headboard of the bed and the dresser. From the program, I understand that this was a rare case. I have an aunt in Missouri that got bit on the knee cap by one. It was a horrible wound, so she had to have plastic surgery to fix things up. Good luck with this situation.

Burchtree is right--spiders are generally solitary critters.

And fiddlebacks aren't particularly aggressive...it's just that they tend to hide in places that force them to act defensively such as hiding in drawers and things where people put their hands.

If you see even one more inside, I'd speak to an exterminator (for free) over the phone. They are outdoor animals by nature, so if you see two in the same general area, something's up.

Flamin' 'ell, I've just type "brown recluse bite" into google images search. I'm glad we don't have these in the UK! I suppose living here does have the occasional advantage.

Thanks folks. Really appreciate the help. spoke with an entimologist who said you'll never get rid of them and every home in Memphis has them. the solution is to keep the bug population down so that they turn on themselves.

Reminds me of the joke about how get rid of crabs with a bottle of scotch and a handful of sand. Pour the scotch on the affected area, and rub in the sand. The little guys get drunk and throw rocks at each other. Problem solved. No offense to scotch drinkers :)

They are all over the place here. I've been to the doc once a year for spider bites the last 4 or 5 years- if there is a spider or a tick around, it will find me for some reason when I'm mowing the lawn, messing in the garage, or mtn biking. I get big red marks that itch like crazy and are visible for 3 - 6 months. And I've never caught one biting me. During one of my visits to the doc for these, he said it was probably a brown recluse bite, and when I asked him why it didn't look look like those horrible pics on the internet he said that not everyone will react to a bite the same way - just like bee stings - it can kill one person and hardly affect another. One of the few critters I don't feel bad about killing, and not eating.

Had a friend got bit on the inner thigh and it rotted out a big hole.

Never did find out what he was doing out by the woodpile with his pants down. ;)

Well, we don't have brown recluse out here, but the widows are like roaches in the summer.

A few simple habits help- I hang most of my clothes including shorts and t shirts, ball my socks up good in a loosely packed drawer with cedar boards, and always always always check shoes and gloves before wearing! (and one managed to get onto the dahboard day before last)

Teaching my 4 year old about them this past week was fun.

You're not supposed to kill a spider. You can whisper a secret message to one and the intended recipient will get it. So sayeth Neil Gaiman

Hey Guys....

This is typical of a recluse bite. I have never heard anything about people reacting differently. My understanding is that it causes necrosis (desolving) of flesh. I never heard of a difference between people being bite. The only difference in the bite, like with all poisons, is dosage. More poison more necrotic tissue. Only remedy that I am aware of is the removal of enough tissue early enough to keep it from spreading deeper.

I had spiders in my apartment. I killed theoens I saw, then I sprayed raid in the corners, around the floorboards, and along where the wall meets the cieling. then I sprayed around the windows, and all 3 doors it takes to get into my apartment from outside. I haven;t seen a spider in the entire building since.

Normark if i may ask. Why the hand wasnt treated before when it was known that the man had the bite???? I hope its not you in the pic. Now i need to read more about that spider. Never heard of them here in CA. Is there a treatment for the bite???
