I was wandering around the gun show this weekend at little rock, arkansas when i stopped to look at some knives that looked like livesay's work. got to talking to the guy behind the table and soon found out 2 things, 1. it was the man himself standing guard over his table and 2. you don't pronounce his name the way i thought you did. We stood around and talked knives for a while and he seemed like a hell of a guy. I ended up buying a bow hunting buddy to go with my 5 year old woo which gets carried at work every shift. if the buddy is as good as the woo i'll be a happy fat guy. Newt said his website should be up and running in about 2 months. It's funny how many knifemakers you run into and they take time to talk knives with a novice, they don't talk down or look at you like you're an idiot but usually are quite friendly. of course some are peckerheads but everyone has a bad day now and then. well this was my latest brush with greatness. later, ahgar

Kinda like "I shook hands with Hitler once!".

Congrats, you should of asked him why he didn't take care of all the people he ripped off.

I am aware that there have been problems with him in the past and i can't comment on that as i don't know the particulars of the problems. The point of my post, and you obviosly missed it, is I met a knifemaker I had read about and produced a knife that i use and like very much. My dealings with the man are all i can judge him by and the 2 times i've dealt with him he has done me right. as far as your quote, "I shook hands with Hitler once!" I can only assume you lost a lot of money to the man to equate him with Hitler.
as i said just my experience.
Moderators if this thread is going to turn into a flamefest then please feel free to delete it, I apologize for any problems this may cause. ahgar

let me rephrase:

"He's a real nice guy even though he rips people off."

I haven't lost a dime to him, but a thief is a thief, even if they are nice.

I thought he wasn't making knives any more. Interesting he keeps selling knives at shows when there are lots of people he took money from and didn't deliver. I don't think I'd call such actions "greatness" either.

I have a feeling that this thread is going to end up at the Good, Bad, & Ugly Forum, and then maybe off to Whine & Cheese.:D.:D.

I thought a son-in-law or someone tried to fill in some back orders for him before they shut it down completely. Something about his equipment being stolen or some such. He really shouldn't be doing shows with his rep. Oh well.

Thanks for posting -- a lot of people are going to be interested in this news.

Huh, maybe if he spent some of that time making knives for people who have paid for knives, he might be worth mentioning.

Heh, not making knives anymore...stolen equipment...knives are in the mail and blah blah blah...

Even better, "I have this in stock, can send it out straight away"

Newt, Oliver, Alan....... on and on it goes
Phil

It really surprises me to see that he is back knifemaking. He lets someone else make up for a bunch of his screwups and then figures he can start again with a clean slate? Freakin' amazing.

Ahgar, I'm glad you enjoyed the time you spent with Mr. Livesay. I am sure he is a real nice guy to talk to, but what he did was just plain wrong.

I still have not received my order. It has been over 2 years. Luckily I am only out about $50. Some people were out a lot more.

From what I understood, the daughter and son-in-law took delivery of all his remaining stock and were liquidating it, while people who responded with what they were out in orders from Newt by a certain date were being taken care of by the son-in-law who also makes knives of his own.

I really wanted a Sandbar Bowie, but I'm glad I didn't order one or send any money. I just didn't get a good vibe from his comments via email, so I just let it drop. Sad really. I, for one, certainly hope he doesn't put his website back up. He owes a lot of people money/knives, and that should be his focus.

I'm also not surprised he's selling at shows. People going to shows won't likely know his past, and they're always looking for a bargain. The price and quality on his knives was never the problem anyway.

My experience, exactly.

The product is good, the design is good, the business and service aspect plain sucked.

I buy Livesay products on the secondary market, but will not buy from 'the man' again.

Good luck.

"Brush with greatness"

I brush with Crest and Crest is far more reliable!!!!

and how does he pronounce his name, is it Bull-sh-it screw-up?

I.

But these people are buying his son in laws knives, not knives made by Newt Livesay. Are they getting a break on the price agreed to by Livesay, or are they paying full price for a Livesay that they're not getting?

The company was Mt Sequoyah knives, and they were livesays, having bought two last year. As to what is happening today? Who knows.

From what I read, they were getting their orders filled that they had already payed for. Ref :

I should rephrase my question. FWIW, it sounds like they are paying for a Livesay knife, that isn't made by Livesay, but by his son in law. If they agreed to a set price, or have already paid, should they get some money taken off their bill? They agreed to pay for a knife made by Newt Livesay, but his son in law made it instead. I'm guessing that, even for his shoddy business practices, he can make a better knife than his son in law, and his son in laws knives would cost less if they didn't have the Livesay name attached to them. Is the son in law even filling orders as Livesay orders, or under his own name?

I Have had a FEW recent dealing with Darryl and Joda and many converstations and let me tell you they are superb folk. Newt was/is? a piss poor business man BUT if he played any role in his daughters upbringing i gotta say he did a SUPERB JOB IMHO:thumbup: . Both Darrly and Joda are Doing their best to help out and are JUST as frustrated and dissapointed as those still at loss (I know having been there) BUT are doing their best, seriously. And for the record I was able to pick up some Livesay product at what I feel was BELOW cost from Joda to boot. Just my .02
