brush with greatness, newt livesay

WOW, I had no idea Newt Livesay had the type of reputation described in this thread. I had never met him but had bought a few of his knives at shows over the last few years. Nice knives for reasonable prices.

I'm guessing that, even for his shoddy business practices, he can make a better knife than his son in law, and his son in laws knives would cost less if they didn't have the Livesay name attached to them. Is the son in law even filling orders as Livesay orders, or under his own name?

Sir,

You can reach me or my husband by phone at 479-283-8776. You may also swing by our small shop in Fayetteville, Ark. ANYTIME! Please I encourage you to do so that you can make both intelligent informative statements in the future regarding MSK Knives :D

I have always loved this forum! Cougar is a no nonsense – smart a$$ :p . That’s what I have always liked about him. There are people here for the right reasons and there are people here for the wrong reasons. I giggle because at times you all are like a bunch of ole women from my grandmother’s Thursday afternoon bunko game ;)

What little knowledge I have of the knife world is mainly through my father and now my husband. The people that are here for the right reasons - I've learned a great deal from. It is no secret that Cliff Stamp and my father have had a round or two but Mr. Stamp is a gentleman that I've learned a great deal from over the past 7+ years. He is informative and knowledgeable when it comes to his reviews. One thing I'm most impressed with is Mr. Stamp’s ability to have all of his information correct and factual before presenting his review(s) - even when his reviews are not always flattering to the knife maker.

There are a great deal of men here I enjoy mainly because they are just plain ole, honest, good hearted gentleman: loandr., fixer27, Keith Montgomery, sak_collector, fudo, kacy, etc.

I have NO intentions of defending myself or my husband AGAIN. I think if you read over a few forums we’ve been there and done that. I realize without the shadow of a doubt there will always be cynicism, how can there not be? But you can see my father is still making knives. He even attends the occasional gun show here and there. Does he make them at the rate he once did? Nope…will he ever again? Nope.

Mr. Silenthunterstudios you seem interested in my family so give me a call and I’ll catch you up. Trust me I have no secrets or hidden agenda’s.

There is nothing to win in these flaming wars Mr. Wolfmann601. I try so hard not to get involved with every little post that is incorrect, but you are correct in your last sentence. However, there was nothing honest in Mr. Silenthunterstudios post.

Again, I'm not doing the whole 12 page flaming thing but time and time again my husbands integrity has been questioned by people who are not demonstrating a whole lot of integrity themselves. I do not know Mr. Silenthunterstudios nor to my knowledge does he own one of my husbands products. So how can he make such statements?

Some people on this forum pass judgement without sound knowledge. They jump on the bandwagon for the ride. Those are the wrong people Mr. Wolfmann601 I was referring too.

Everyone, Mr. Wolfmann601, has a family and no ones family is perfect. Both my husband and I have always defended those that my father treated unfairly. If I ship a knife for my dad it's a Livesay. If I ship a knife for my husband it's a Parent.

My huband laughs when I get so upset over some of these posts. He won't even play into these threads.

We respect the same things you do sir, honesty and hardwork!

Joda, you and Darrell are both top notch in my opinion. As far as I am concerned you deserve nothing but praise. The knife community is a better place with you two in it.

Rereading my post, I can see how it can be interpreted as a dig on you and your husband. That was not my intention. I know nothing about your business, your fathers knives, or your husbands knives, only what I read on here. Lots of respected members have stepped up to the plate to recommend your husbands knives and your business practices. I was under the impression that people who had bought a Livesay knife, and paid for a Livesay knife, were getting a knife made by someone else, namely your husband, but were still paying for a Livesay knife per se. I asked that question, and received a resounding no. I meant no disrespect towards the quality of your husbands knives, and was going on what I now think is flawed logic on my part, thinking that the quality of your husbands work was less than your fathers just because of age differences. Once again, it was just a question that I had, I meant no disrespect, and I'm sorry that you took it as such. I was not trying to start a flame war either. I apologize, and request your forgiveness. I joined this forum, and participate here, for the right reasons as well. Thank you.

I am of Newt's "Paid In Full backorder Customers". I ordered/paid for a Livesay LAK-5 (before I learned the valuable lesson of not prepaying). It was, after all, my first time ordering a custom blade.

After waiting nearly 3 years, I won't be getting that LAK-5; I'll be getting an MS blade. I'll be getting one that won't make me angry every time I look at it. Instead, I'll be getting a blade that I will appreciate due to the high caliber of the maker's standards of personal integrity and workmanship. That point alone makes it worth more to me. If it took an unpleasant incident (such as dealing with Newt) to meet extrordinary folks like Joda & Darrell, then so be it. I would like to thank Joda and Darrell for their super efforts on my behalf. They have bent over backwards in order to help me get my backorder, even though they didn't have to.

I also believe that in spending 5 years learning his craft by helping Newt make his blades, Darrell has paid his dues. Let his workmanship, designs, and honorable business ethics speak for themselves.

Dan,
Apology is accepted and I truly appreciate it! I'm sorry to it went as far as it did. No hard feelings on this end :D

Ken,

Thank you for the kind words. I'm sorry that you won't be getting a Livesay knife but I believe you will be just as pleased. Your emailing my husband the design of the knife you we're wanting was so funny I cried:

"Darrell, I believe the blade width was 1 3/4". (Don't quote me on that) It's a full flat grind. As far as a name...please consider BTN-5 (Better Than Newt's-5). I'll probably call it a SN-2.5 (Screw Newt-2.5 yrs waiting)"

Also - you can have a conversation all day with my husband on the phone - you can email back and forth :D but in the end Darrell has been married as long as you have :D :D :D :D

I like these people. Keith said it right: The community is a better place with them and their knives.

So how DO you pronounce Livesay correctly...?

Coop

In the past I owned a Livesay and I currently own one from Darrell that I bought when I met him at the Tulsa show. For usefulness and quality both makers are very good. For finish, the MS knife I own is a little more refined than the Livesay...nice bead blast vs. the rough black that was on the Livesay. Both are obvious work knives not meant to be treated delicately.

I applaud MS Knives for the effort they went through to try and take care of as many of Newts customers as they did. As for the mention above of pricing, Darrells knives are very fairly priced...I saw none at the show that I considered over priced and will definately be looking to pick up another when the next show rolls around in October assuming thet have a table.

He! He! Joda, I wasn't going to mention that publicly, out of respect for you and Darrell. It was going to be a private joke. Don't ever apologize to me for that blade not being a "Livesay"; it's better in my book! If I had gotten the blade from Newt, it would have been just a business transaction. Coming from Darrell's hands and your heart makes it worth more in my book.

Also - you can have a conversation all day with my husband on the phone - you can email back and forth but in the end Darrell has been married as long as you have
That's OK, for now. I'm already dreaming up a way to make you take $$$! ;)

The thing about that quote is this - if my dad was in the right frame of mind and things we're different - even he would have laughed :D :D :D I don't know you but I do -- you know what I mean  and I think I know where your heart is ;)

I know I'll never get my dad back the way he once was but there was a time where times we're good and even he would enjoy a really "good" poke at himself.
