Buck 103 as EDC?

I like the 103 as an EDC. That nice curved edge makes it a great slicer and the wide blade is ideal for spreading PB, mayo, jam or what have you. Not as pointy as some blades, but pointy enough for general chores..

IMHO the 103 is a skinner and not suited for all purpose use. You might consider a from top to bottom, a 117, a 102, compared with a 103 and at the bottom a Gen 5 skinner. The 103's blade shape is the draw back for all purpose use. The 102's handle is small and can be problematic to prolonged use.

I just saw that Gen 5 skinner and immediately looked it up. Looks like something I’d enjoy.

Ohhhhhhhhh fuuuuuuuuuudge. Only I didn’t say fudge.😆😞

OP - for an EDC Buck fixed blade I’d always recommend the 102. Got everything you need, nothing you don’t. Small enough to stay outta the way, but big enough to cut anything you need cut.

I always wanted to modify a 103, like DM’s. Not the stacked leather just the blade shape.

Then they released the 212, Its the perfect semi urban edc. When off the clock I’ve been carrying a 212 for over a year. No complaints. These are great knives.

The 212’s are hard to get now. So modifying a 103 makes sense again. The 103 has a better plunge line plus you’ll have a better sheath.

I picked a a couple of these. Built to use. D2 steel Micarta handle. Perfect.

This thread is about modifying 103’s. I’d love to see someone resurrect it with a cool custom job.

A 103 pro would be an awesome place to start!

DeSotoSky that modified 105 is sort of what I had in mind :), beautiful.
I missed the boat on those phenolic 212's, I was under employed for a time and by the time I recovered they were hard to find. Really thought about the ironwood limited model but could not make myself pull the trigger. So, here I am, planning on ordering another heritage series 103 next weekend and doing some blade shaping. The more I use the 103 the more I enjoy the feel.

The more I look at the comparison picture I took, the more I think you’ll be better off with the modified 103. Please post pictures.

So, sort of steering back to the original topic, I have been carrying my unmodified 103 lately for fun. I find the recent 103 profile pretty "spicy" and I enjoy the overall feel/balance of the knife as an all purpose blade. It just needs a bit of tip adjustment, which I am going to attempt to address when my replacement is delivered Friday.

I think the Gen-5 is about the ideal small fixed blade. I have 2 Blade Show award Gen-5's and at least a dozen times I started to pull one out and use it. Because of the mirror polished blades and the award inscription (I display them with my 112's) I reluctantly put them back in the pile. One is a Burl and the other Elk? Kind of a fat/broad blade like the 103 I always thought it was one of the best designs for a user.

I wish the Gen5 had a lanyard hole like the 113.
I carry my Gen5's in an aftermarket leather slip sheath, and a lanyard on the knife would be nice as the knife slips so low into the sheath.

The Gen5 had so many different sheaths, and the ones I like sorta belong to Gen5's I don't carry.....

The recent nylon sheaths have the loop in the middle, so the knife handle is above your belt. I prefer them lower.

The Gen5 is a favorite knife of mine as well.
