Buck 110 for EDC

I carried a 112 and then a 110 for many years. Of the two, I think the 112 is the better knife. I wouldn't carry either now, though. Too much blade - play, too much weight.

I can see how the weight would make some shy from it, but blade-play? Maybe you got a lemon?? Either that or I got a really good one! :p Mine has zero blade play and is like a fixed blade when opened.

I've had several 112s and 110s. All were rock - steady when new and all developed significant blade play with use.

I've owned and carried quite a few Benchmades, Spydercos, and Gerbers, but my favorite knife is still the Buck 112. After seeing Lenny's pictures of his custom 110, I've decided that my dream knife would be a 112 with a BG-42 blade and oak scales. :D I hear that Buck may be offering custom 112s this year... I just hope the rumors are true!

I started carrying my first 110 when I was about 15. I carried and ABUSED that knife for 10-12 years until losing it while drunk. I don't rember the blade being lose in it. I now own two 110 and a 112. None of them have any problem with blade play. Being folders I know that blade play is possible but I really have not experienced it with my 110/112's.
I hope that the rumor's of custom 112's is true. I really want one with stag and maybe a BG-42 blade although I'm not unhappy with the standard blades. It would be nice to try something new.

Development of blade play is an issue. Then again, it's true for pretty much any knife with that type of pivot assembly. The best you can do is to avoid lateral pressure on the blade, from activities like whittling. But sooner or lateral, that pin will start to work its way out. I've had a 110 develop quite a bit of play, along with countless numbers of slipjoints from various manufacturers. Boy am I glad that makers started using pivot screws.

I have been a heavy-duty user of 110s and 112s for over 20 years, and have never experienced problems with blade play. Nonetheless, I am sure such conditions exist in some knives, and I am sure Buck's customer service department would be happy to correct it.

For the record, I'm speaking of lateral blade play. None of my 110s have developed vertical blade play over time.

Buzzbait, and others, I'm sure you guys are aware of Buck's Customer Service. If for any reason the blade develops some lateral play, send it in. I guarantee you it will come back "out of the box" tight and sharp. I know this may seem like, "I shouldn't have to" but as Buzzbait said, "it's true for pretty much any knife with that type of pivot assembly" and he's right. At least Buck will make it right when it does happen. And be real, its not like you're gonna have to be sending the knife in every other month. Think about how long it takes for noticible lateral play to develop on a NEW 110...

yeah i was considering it. Already carry a Leatherman Supertool on my belt so i think the 110 is not much different in weight albeit 2 ounces more on the Leatherman.

I edc mine sometimes, just not everyday because I prefer carbon steel. When I do edc it I prefer to use the nice piece of leather that it came with. It's an awesome knife with a great steel and will compete with the most modern and tactical folders and probably beat countless numbers of them.
Mine was my highschool graduation present.

I have a 110 that I wore so much that the leather has a permanent set to it from the vehicle seat. But that was years ago. I take it out maybe once a year now and clean the green crud off the bolsters, re-oil. I still like it for itself, but it is a tad heavy. Unfortunately the 110's that I last saw when walking through Walmart had cock eyed blades noticeably out of alignment. A real shame.

This necro thread is old than most scotch whiskey

I had no clue that this thread was so old, why would and how could someone dig it up ? Wouldn't it be archived or something ?

Now I feel bad for posting in it 😳

Eh, people will get mad for necrobumping a thread just as easily as they'd get mad for a redundant thread being made... use the search function, they said. We don't need any more of these threads, they said... oh well. [emoji13]

Oh well...old thread, good topic anyway. I carry mine everyday. I don't always use it since I carry other knives as well. Usually end up using a slipjoint more often. I don't like to leave the house without it though. Today I actually grabbed a 112 instead and I love it as well......

12 year necro. Sweet. Ok, I'll play. I carried a Buck 110 for the better part of a decade in a former job. I wore a heavy belt with other equipment on it so the 110 in its sheath was just another tool. I later replaced it with a Gerber Bolt-Action folder in a nylon sheath, which was a much lighter knife. I still have both, and if those were the only two I owned, I would carry the Gerber. The 110 is too heavy and bulky for what I might need a knife for these days. Still in good shape, just a tool I no longer need that has been replaced by better (for my uses) alternatives.

I own a 110, but only carry it when I'm out in the woods, hiking or camping or fishing. It's just too cumbersome to use as an edc. I'd prefer a Spyderco Delica 4 or a kershaw blur s30v
