Buck 110 poor finish

Just bought a Buck 110. This is my fifth Buck knife, and I had no worries about fit or finish prior to this purchase based on my previous experience. However, the wood grip on the knife.... well, it simply doesn't look like wood. It's basically black, and on the edges has what almost looks like wood.... It seems like they didnt smooth it right in the factory, and one side is a lot worse than the other, although neither of them have the normal wood paneling/finish like my 112 and 55.

One of two things happened.

1. They either didn't check the knife for quality control
or
2. They checked the knife for quality control, and somehow found it acceptable

Either way, I am very disappointed with the finish on my 50th anniversary 110. There was also some black grit/dirt inside that I was mostly able to clean out, but there was enough of it that I definitely found it odd.

I'm calling them tomorrow (Monday) and asking for a replacement. For anyone who's dealt with their customer service/warranty policy, will they pay for my shipping? And how long will this take? I'm going on a trip in a couple weeks and I''d like to bring it with.

I certainly hope they will pay for my shipping. I will be extremely unhappy if I have to pay for THEIR mistake on a $40 knife. Any other good company I've dealt with like this has sent me a pre-paid return label and I didn't have to spend a penny or leave my house (as it should be).

You will have to pay shipping to send it to the factory. They will pay back. And as far as bucks quality goes, in my opinion it's slipping bad. I got a new 500 and the handle was cracked and a rivet was loose. Bought a 119 and the edge was layed back way past 15 degrees. If you want a real 110 I'd get a old 2 3 or 4 dot. This new stuff is just sadly disappointing, and I really hate to say that about buck.
 
wow what a first post. All for a 40 dollar knife. No pictures, so we can't even see what you're talking about. I'm gathering you don't like the color of your scales? Use the fricking knife man. It's 40 dollars. Does it affect cutting or lock up? If not decide to take the blade with you and send it in later after your trip.

I think if you spoke with customer service first, instead of posting a gripe that you had to sign up on the forum to take the time to do so, you'd find they will take care of your problem and tell you the turn around time.

For what the op is having an issue with, I'm not seeing a problem. There's no issue with function or safety.

I agree. The only knife I've been pleasantly surprised with is the cheap Buck Vantage Select. It tells you something when someone is looking to buy a new 110, 300 series, or 500, that they would rather have a model from the past than one from current production.

But shouldn't all bucks knives be the same quality? As with everything else. Cheap Cheap keep costs down. Rush Rush. Seems no one understands American made anymore. By hand means lots not anymore :(

If nobody complains than everything stays the same. I'm not willing to take anymore chances with Buck at this point because I get tired of sending knives back for exchanges and still getting the same product back of lower quality. Plus you end up paying more in postal fees that would have gotten you a better knife. Can be frustrating.
 
Yep, scower the flea market's and pawn shops etc to find them. I don't have anyone to trade with or anything. No one round here likes buck but me.
 
I am surprised no one has jumped in here to defend to the last man, so to speak. Listen there are knives that get out with stuff wrong but it would be of interest to everyone that reads the Buck forum to see "Photos" of those knives and their problems. Please, try to include photos of the bad spots, along with your words on any reviews pro or con, everyone likes photos.

300, I would. But I have simply stopped buying new bucks due to this very reason. I have not owned one since being on this forum. 95% of my collection is 85 and back.
 
I'll speak up..... I have lots of current/recent models.
There were none that I was displeased with.
Every one of them was just right, including the sheaths.

When I sent 2 knives to Buck for repair, one was 20 years old and the other 40 years old, they treated me awesomely!
One came back looking brand new and the other was too broken, so they replaced it with a new one.

The kitchen knives.... well.... the best way to put it is that they kick some serious ass!
Best ones I have ever gotten, although not the most expensive by any means.

Just my opinions, however, I am a happy guy with ALL of them.

My latest purchase was the current production 301. I like the knife alot with the exception of the weak walk and talk. It's like there isn't any.
 
Yea ppl always tell me ahhh them bucks are junk u can't sharpen them, I always say well you need to learn how to Sharpen a knife then, cuz I just so happen to have one in my pocket that's razor Sharp :o

Just a thought.....
Since you paid $40, I assume you bought the 110 from a knife dealer and not directly from the Buck Factory (which would have been a bit higher price)
So..... Did you contact the dealer you bought the 110 from?
Many dealers will take care of their buyers quite well.
Perhaps they would swap it out for you.
If you bought it from an actual local store, they should exchange it or give you a refund.

Like was said earlier, photos say a thousand words!

If you really want to use the knife as soon as possible, sand the rough patches smooth, then use a buffing wheel with green compound to shine it up afterward. It will look brand new in just a few minutes.
Just make sure to cover the medallion with masking tape etc.... so you don't harm it.
I have done this with used and abused knives that I bought from the big auction site.

Okay, since there seems to be some confusion here....

I did not say all Buck knives are bad, because I love them and have others that are flawless.

Someone mentioned I should spend my time contacting customer service instead of "complaining". They're closed on weekends, and I wanted to know if they'd pay shipping. Didn't think that was unreasonable of me.

In MY opinion, I'm not happy with the finish on it. Yes, the knife functions fine. But $40 is a lot for a knife, at least for a full-time college student who can only work 30 hours a week. I'm on a tight budget and when I spend my very hard-earned money I'd like to get what I pay for, which includes an acceptable finish. I work in a 5-10 degree meat room lifting 60-70 pounds pieces of sharp equipment while I'm soaking wet for a good portion of my 9 hour shift, making $6.70/hr after taxes. I think it's reasonable for me to value the money I spend.

This was my first post, but I've been reading threads on this forum for a long time. It just so happens this is the first question that I've had.

Since one or two people seem to think I'm just making this up, I'll post some pictures tomorrow when I get the chance.

Thank you to those of you that answered my question and shared your experiences. I appreciate the input.

In your case, documenting what is wrong with it using photos, helps others see what is wrong, and can help get the best advice.

Yep, you have to pay the shipping to them, but they will pay to send it back.
They will take care of it for you. Depending on what the issues are, they could send back a replacement knife, or perhaps cleaning up the handle scales.
If you send it to them, make sure to include a note detailing all issues you have with the knife, so they know to look for those things, and remedy them.
When I sent them my 2 knives for repair, it took Exactly 2 weeks from my door to them, fixed etc, and back to my door. That was a fast example though. This time of year may take longer due to hunting season, and more repair type stuff being requested.
Up to six weeks is possible.

By the way, I am 100% sure we would love to see photos of your other Buck Knives too :)

Oh..... for posting photos.... you have to host them somewhere like photobucket. Then Copy the IMG link and Paste the IMG link right into your post here. :)
