Buck 110 sharpening notch

Doesn't that kind of sharpening notch just remove the part of the blade as you were having trouble getting sharp anyway? Is there really a net gain here?

Seems like it adds an angle to snag stuff on too.

My thought exactly. And it adds a weak spot in the blade. I am open to someone explaining from experience why this is not so, but it is my initial thought.

I know it weakens the blade - notches are notorious crack starters. If the "super strong steel" makes up for the notch then I would argue that the steel could be thinner and the knife lighter, with no notch, at equal strength to the thicker, notched knife. I'm only open to explanations about why the notch really helps sharpen.

This does just remove that spot, but does it in a way that I think actually looks good and allows me to keep my stone away from the tang / ricasso.

As far as the notch weakening the blade, I have no requirement for a locking blade on a daily basis and the 110 is at east 5x overkill for my needs so I'm sure I'll never find out. A guy who could realistically get by with a vic classic isn't going to damage a buck 110.
