Buck 111

Thanks. I was thinking of trying it myself, but I spoke to a few guys on another forum that does a lot of custom work, and they felt it was not worth the time and effort. There are two on the Bay that were tempting me, but I have a few mint ones already, so I will just keep my eye open for more that have not been engraved....

I couldnt believe how cheap I got mine until next day when I took the time to look at the description and pics. It had more writing than a hwy overpass. Thats my fine for BUI, bidding under the influence.

LOL...I don't drink, but I do get caught up in the bidding. I really have more than enough of these but I do like them and I am a sucker for a deal.....

Stumps could inlay some nice stag into the handle or maybe some Yellow Horse stone work inlays would be the ticket.

David's lovely wife might be able to engrave something wonderful over/thru the lettering.

Why not anodize the aluminum since you start cheap what could go wrong? My DIL has access to small batch anodization. Would the knife have to be in pieces I wonder...

I have the Classic Series, the 111, 510, 513 and 515 and over the years added a 525 and a 521 both with the same aluminum body and design.
In fact I got the 525 thinking it was the 525 from the Classic series. Half the fun of collecting is the looking.

Joe, Way to go. Getting the whole set makes for a nice collection. The 525 is not an aluminum body. It is sterling silver. DM

Great to know David. I picked it up in a pawn shop for $10.00. When I show my collection the Classic series is always the ones the people are drawn to.

There is also two other rare Classics... Both of them are made of Brass...
Classic Brass 111 and I think Joe Houser said that the other one was a Classic 513...

All the Classics came with a mirror polished blade. As the series was close to being discontinued, the year date knives were given a satin finished. DM

I've seen Classic 3 dot 111s with satin finished blades... My Brass 111 has a satin finished 3 dot blade... ITE

David M, you always have lots of good info... Thanks

I don't just sit around and make stuff up. Effort toward reading and research would reveal from Vern Taylor's article "A Classic Story" in the May 1996 issue of Buck Collectors newsletters he writes: " The very first 111's actually had 110 blades in them. There probably were less than fifty of these made. In addition, there were about 2,000 made with a satin-finish blade before the mirror-polished blades were ready." Exceptions can be found prior to NORMAL production run models. For instance, I have in my collection a Classic with a polished 110 blade in it. DM

The 525 down front engraved with "DAD" is a pretender. It's called the 525 Classic and is an aluminum overlay, not sterling. The coin pattern is identical to the sterling. It does not have the same luster as a sterling when the two are next to each other, there will not be a hallmark on the edge, and the blade is not mirror polished. Also, it comes in a standard box, not a jewel case.
