I'm glad you are working 'with' and not 'against' your knife. Im sure letting go of the anger approach also helps.
 
The grit is a combination of "shop dust" and leftover sharpening compound. Open and close the knife 50 to 100 times to break in the knife and use a tooth pick to scoop out the grit that becomes visible and itll start smoothening out. My original 112 was gritty AF. After 200 openings it is (and sounds) smooth
 
I must have opened and closed it at least 500 times already. Washed it out with warm water and blasted it with WD-40. It’s OK but not perfectly smooth on opening. Maybe some day it will be.
 
I’m glad to hear it worked out for you and that you really like it now. That’s a great way for a new knife to join up with you. I have noticed that using mineral oil on the pivot helps to smooth and break it in after some use. Penetrating oil helps to clean out the gunk but most of them tend to evaporate and dry out faster. Synthetic oil are good to start with but it gets gummy after a while. Mineral oil doesn’t dry out or get gummy but it does wick out and away so every so often it needs a drop. This thread has been a roller coaster ride. Now I kind of want one. Do they still make autos?

It will never be "perfectly" smooth. It's a Buck back lock, not some bearing-riding custom. It's important to temper one's expectations in line with the physical realities of the product. Should a knife come gritty and dirty from factory? No. However, "custom shop" or not, it's a production line operated by employees, not artisans.

This is what I hope too. In fact I would love one of these 110s with finger grooves and Drop Point blade shape.

A dab of lube might help. I use BreakFree CLP.

I’ve used 4 different lubes so far. That’s not the problem. I honestly think it’s a piece of grit embedded in the lock bar tab or a badly machined lock bar tab. Like I said earlier, it’s better but not perfectly smooth. It’ll still lock up closed or open occasionally.
 
Life's to short to be irritated by your hobby, if it will nag at you I'd sell it or replace/send it back. Some people are way less perceptive than others, and others just flat out don't care if there is defects/imperfections.

I've held many knives that I consider to have blade play that irks me that other guys think is "rock solid".

If you really like the design buy 3 or more of them to get a good one and return the poor qc ones.
 
It could be a flag of debris stuck in the back spring rocker bar that randomly moves into the path of the tang cam. I had a vantage pro that did that. It is a screw together so I was able to disassemble it and I found a piece of cloth like material fouled up in the pivot action. Of course you can’t take yours apart so you did the right thing sending it in. Let them take care of it. Still hoping you get it fixed up to use.
 
I just emailed Buck asking them when 'slim' handles will be an available option in the custom shop. We'll see.

So you're saying the debris is jammed somewhere in the orange circle in my pic below?
If so, I agree.
I just don't understand why it didn't get washed out.
I mean, I must've washed the whole mechanism out with Dawn and water, or WD-40 maybe 6 times.
Must be really jammed in there!
