Buck 112 Slim Heritage

So with all this "guesswork" about debris and polishing compound getting stuck in the mechanism, I've come up with one question that nobody has asked yet:
Why doesn't Buck do all the polishing before assembling these knives? Polish- Clean-Assemble. SIMPLE!
Seems like the obvious way to make a knife to me. And there would be tons fewer knives being returned to Buck.
I for one would love to know Buck's reasoning on this!
IS THERE A BUCK REP IN THE HOUSE?

So you're saying the debris is jammed somewhere in the orange circle in my pic below?
If so, I agree.
I just don't understand why it didn't get washed out.
I mean, I must've washed the whole mechanism out with Dawn and water, or WD-40 maybe 6 times.
Must be really jammed in there!

I don’t know for certain but possibly could be to the side of the blade tang and frame kind of scrubbing back and forth. I have used my phone magnifying camera to zoom in on tight spots and have spotted various things caught up in mechanical moving devices. That’s what I generally do first off and that way I can capture the image to better have an idea of.

On the pin together models they have to grind down the pivot pin and rear bolster pins after penning it in place and sand it down smooth then polish it. I dk but maybe The screw together models they probably do finish before assembly.

OK, just to play Devil's Advocate:
If this were the case and the debris were trapped between the blade tang and frame wall (bearing surface) it would seem to me that ithe debris would actually be trapped and never move out of the way making every opening and closing very stiff and gritty.

DOH!
Right.

How is any of this acceptable quality control? On a $200 knife?
Because we are relying on word of mouth for the description of the condition of the knife here, everyone has different standards, and the knife is probably just fine.

I have been buying and using Buck folders for over half a century. I have never had an issue. Not once. Not with regular items or with any of the several purchases from the custom shop. That's all...........

Well, I received my Replacement 112 yesterday and it's better than the first one.
- fit and finish are better; all the pins on the handle are smooth, the first one had several pins with sharp edges
- the handle scales are the same thickness and color on both sides, the first one had slight variations
- the blade is LASER sharp, and has a slightly wider bevel than the first; smaller angle should cut even better
- zero blade play, solid lockup
- there was a bit of grittiness in the pivot; I washed the whole thing out with water and Dawn and used a toothbrush; it was amazing how much black stuff came out; I then hosed it out with WD-40 and more black stuff came out; dried it, then lubed it; the action is much better now but not perfectly smooth; at least it doesn't lock up during opening or closing like the first one
- the pivot is tighter than the first one; I assume it'll get smoother and looser with use
All in all, a good knife, but not a great knife, which I'll keep and use.
Bottom line, Buck's customer service is top notch; I shipped it back July 17 with their prepaid label and got the replacement July 26; very quick turnaround IMO.
BUT their QC has a long way to go.

Im glad you spoke up.

I got an email from the person in the CKS introducing themselves and explaining their progress in making my 112.

[A youtube video!]

Buck is listening and responding!

You got knocked down. Pick yourself up, dust off and keep going!

Oh, BTW, I wish Buck would put factory thumb studs on these Slim Select knives.
That would go a long way towards making them modern folders!
