I'm looking to purchase a Stockman style folder, and I have a line on a discontinued Buck 307.
The other one I am looking at is the Buck 301.
Any opinions / photos comparing these two would be appreciated.

The Buck slip joints were produced overseas for a while, but Buck recently brought them back here to Idaho  I can't give an honest opinion as I haven't owned one of their slip joints... Yet. I am going to order a 301 soon.
I looked at them today at the local outdoor store, and I really like them.

You may get some response here, but if you go to the Buck subforum and ask, you will get all the info and pictures you could ever want.

There are a couple guys that have extensive collections of the 300 series Bucks

Thanks Mike,
I had better luck searching over there.
Buck 307 on the way here...

Excellent choice. The 307 is a great size, and I'm sure you will like it

Just to keep things clear -- none of the 30x numbered Bucks have ever been produced overseas - that means models 301 thru 309. Some of these have at various times been produced under contract for Buck by other US companies, rather than at the Buck factory, but I think all of these have been Buck factory made in the last few years.

If the model numbers are 37x, for example, they're made overseas.

DItto...Ditto...Ditto

300Bucks

Old 307, from Camillus, in elk. Note rivets, very rare addition to 307s.

Here's a stag 301 along with the SMKWs special ordered 307 yellow.

Holy cow; I thought the 301 was a big knife. That 307 is awesome. Looks like I'll be hunting for one in the new year. Great pics 300Bucks, thanks!

My father has my 301, he's lost all of his other folders. Hope he doesn't lose that one.

Not giving him my 301BB though. 301 with flat ground blades and bone scales, too nice to lose.

That's a cool knife.
I especially like the elk.
Delrin is tough stuff too,
I can't wait to see it.

Thanks for the clarification. My mistake. I could have sworn the 300 series went overseas for awhile.
Its not the first time I've been wrong :D

Pete, you have good taste in using knives. Either of them would be a go-to knife of the first order. Buck builds these stockmen like a Sherman tank of pocket knives, and that's my usual way of describing Buck folders.

I've carried and used both. I had a 307 for a while, and it did not get carried as much as my old 301, which I carried for about 25 years steady. To me, the 307 was just a wee tad too big and bulky for pocket carry. The 301, at 3 7/8ths was just enough smaller that it carried nice. I still have it, and still work it into my rotation for old times sake, and it still works just fine. Not bad for the 12 dollars I paid for it in an army PX in 1967. That 301 was used as a construction site cutter, trout and bird knife, camping tool, and general pocket knife on four continents, and it never failed to do the job.

Heck, get both, it's a short life and you should indulge yourself. The 307 rides well in a belt pouch, while the 301 goes well in the side pocket of jeans. Both are great knives. The new ones actually made by Buck are built better than ever, as far as rugged construction. As nice as Camillus was, the new Buck's are what you could call over built. Probably better than ever. 300 Buck's explained it once that way. I don't think there's anyone around who knows more about the Buck's than him, expept maybe somebody named Buck living in Idaho. :D

Good luck. Every knife knut needs a Buck stockman.

Carl.

these are super knives, visually pleasing and hard working. I especially like the traditional black ones but see a yellow one in my future but haven't decided which yet.
I love these threads on them and lately have been pocketing my own Wrangler 307.
Find that it rides more comfortably in some loose jeans or shorts pocket. If you could only have one (heaven forbid), a 301 could be that one.
I also keep a mid 90's 303 Cadet in the rotation. It rides almost like a pen but cuts like a big guy. You can never go wrong with a Buck 300 model and they are probably the best you can buy for the money.
