I was curious as to what years the Buck 560 was made? I recently saw a Buck 186 on eBay which looks identical to the 560 is there a difference? I own one of these excellent Buck offerings and am awaitng the arrival of my second.

Why would Buck stop pruduction of these? What were they thinking!

Hey D6O,
I don't add much value here (or anywhere), but the 186 has a solid looking clip, can be field stripped, costs more on flea bay, and is on my list.

That 186 is sweet. I am glad that recent DNA testing by a doctor out of Tiajuana, has me related to MPK and, being family, he will "estate" me his 186 and SDPD tools to care for.

Take Care...
Goose.

I gotta get a 186 before I can will it to you. :D

The 186 was introduced in the 1987 Dealer Catalog and basically was the predecessor for the 560. From the '87 catlog - "can be cleaned inside and out and ther blade can be replaced... comes with its own hex wrench... may be used with or without the clip designed tio be field stripped and reassembled..." selling price back then was $53.90 MSRP

In 1993 the 560 was introduced as the NEW Titanium Family (along with a mini Rainbow titanium) with the silver, or "natural titanium" and one with a "black titanium nitride coating." The pocket clip was dropped and a Cordura Plus sheath was include, and the ability to field strip these was no longer there. MSRP in'93 - $84 for the black, $76 for the silver.

There is no mention of the 560's in the 2000 catalog, yet in 2001 the "Crystal" (gold) 560 is introduced as NEW then dropped from the '02 catalog.

Why they were dropped - apparently they weren't the hot sellers of the day. These days, they are worth their weight in gold....

Hey Cliff Clavin...
What did the 560 XL Ti go for? I have that in a "sliver" speckled handle.

Thanks,
Goose.

PS, buyers be aware that I have heard, read, but not seen IRL that some 560s have 110 stamps. Does anyone know if that ever happened on the 186?

I imagine they thought it was too much trouble/cost too much to offer a knife in Titanium. The old threads on the 186 mention stripping the threads. Titanium (I have 1st hand knowledge :( ) is pure hell on tooling; repairing or replacing stripped liners/scales can get expensive, as well as labor intensive [the repairing]. Not an easy/cheap metal to forge either.

The 560 was probably easier on the warranties, since it was riveted and there wasn't much chance of the user screwing anything up. Still, repairs would be labor intensive again.

Basically, just too much trouble. If you're thinking that doesn't stop the other makers...the other makers don't have Bucks' warranty... ;)

It would be interesting to get an opinion from Joe or Jeff on the newer Bucks in Titanium...How they hold up, whether it's worth it versus maintaining them...

You know that palm reader I go to once a week must know something, "Dad"!!! ;)

Oh yeah and D6O, the 186 has a key chain gizmo so you don't have to clean sand out of it if ya drop it in the drink.

Something besides the hex wrench for disassembling it??? What does it look like? (I've only seen pics of the hex wrench)

Thank's everyone for the information and the picture. I really want the older model with the pocket clip and will keep striped threads in mind. I evidently have the 2001 Crystal B560-WC-0 CAT. 5134 which is on the box it came in.

Is it possible to have to many of these?

I meant the "186" has the key chain gizmo. Fixed it in my "edit".
Don't have a pic of a 186, since I don't have one, but I'm sure someone will be bucky brother enough to post or link one.

In 2001 the 560XL-Ti Crystal had a MSRP of $86. The last prices in 1999 for the 560BT (Black XL-Ti) was also $86.00 and the 560GT (XL-Ti) presumably the gray or silver, was $80.00

While I've not heard of any of the 186's with a 110 blade, the 560's with the 110 blade are easy to explain. Warranty blade swaps - or upgrades - as it is basically the same blade. In fact, just a little off topic, I have a plastic handled 426 with a 110 blade.

Thanks Cliffy...
Then I guess I got a good deal on the NIB for $25 less than retail last year. I'm getting all poodle eyed.

Looking at the pictures, and reading the descriptions, in the catalogs, there is no mention of a "key chain gizmo" (which I'm sure was not mentioned as the majority of the people reading the catalogs would have no idea what something with such a technicalogical name would be anyway). There is mention of the hex key and it looks like the hex key was somehow attached to the knife, near the pocket clip, with a small split ring (which some people easily confuse with what is commonly refered to as a key ring.).
