Buck At Work

I never hunted them with dogs..When I first bought my house here in Florida I had 40 acres that had not been farmed for over 30 years and had blackberries in places chest high. It was not unusual to jump 7 or 8 conveys in a afternoon. No one in my family wanted to eat them so after a while I just walked the property to see how close I could get to them before they busted up.

Very nice David. Growing up my father and I shot a lot of bobwhite quail over our Brittany Spaniel and our German Shorthair. That was 40+ years ago. I’d like to do it one more time but doubt we’ll get the opportunity.

Thanks gentlemen.
Mak, my wife prepares these in the oven with brown rice, olive oil and spices. (onion & bell peppers) The bird is saved whole, (legs & breast), Gambel quail
are much larger than a Bobwhite quail. With some rice and her homemade bread, I can only eat one at a meal. Plus, the meat is all white and very rich & tender in taste. Once you have had them it is 'indeed a meal to remember.' You'll be highly motivated to hunt them. Then you'd enjoy the walking, exercise and watching a well trained dog work, is amazing. Better than any home movie. DM

Aint no quail in Western Pa.. And very few grouse also..:(

Quail hunting is second only to elk hunting, for me. I just saw the average cost of a knee replacement in the US is $35,000. I can still walk (limp) flat ground so quail may have to be number 1. But, like jmh Mr. Bobwhite is few and far between in my Ozark area. Wife won't move to KA. When I lived in far western OK I could hunt walking from the house...….The several different kinds of western US quail are bigger than Bobwhites. None can match the Scaled quail on the open ground of the semi-desert for sprinting. I bet David has to run like a jackrabbit for those he has shown in the past. David do you have any Mearns Quail or are they all in AZ. I have not taken those or the Gambles and California quail. Don't pull the Gambels head off next time to show everyone the top-knot. Does anyone ever remember Buck offering "Clippers" for bird hunters. 300

Mountain Quail are much larger than that, I'd say larger than a Dove and better eating...DM isn't those desert Quail, varieties I don't know, just region...

Depends how hungry you are Makael...:D:D:D

My dog won't wait for a treat when he brings one to me. I'll try to remember to take an alternative treat with me. The Gambel are larger than a
white wing dove. But not as large as a Bandtail pigeon. There are some Mearns quail here but I haven't found them. I wish I could as they
hold very well for working a young dog and the size of a Bob White. The Scaled quail I don't care to hunt as they will drive a dog nuts.
I also see an occasional pheasant while working my dog. We have some good times and my wife likes to tag along and make photos of him working. I could get by with a 307 Wrangler but I like my Trapper. DM

nicely done. looks like some good eating.

no quail right around here, but they are in florida. season opened think round oct or so.

went outside one morning and found a Chinese golden pheasant....that's what I call this kinda pheasant. way too tame so I knew someone's backyard pet got free......I let it go instead of capturing it. was able to get very close. I hear they taste like ring-necked pheasants.20141102_130528_480x853.jpg

Good looking bird and trapper David. Not hardly any Quail in E. Texas they say the Fireaints got them.

Thanks, jb, Hawk & Razor. I think that is a Chinese pheasant. I like that Trapper more everyday. Hawk, I grew up during the heyday of Bobwhite Quail hunting in E. TX., 1968-83. My Dad always had dogs and us boys had to exercise them and understand how to care for them. Good training for a know-nothing junior high kid. But it paid big dividends later. I'm the only son that stayed true to my roots. Shotguns
and bird-dogs have kept me focused. DM

Thanks, gents. Very snowy here, roads closed with dangerous driving conditions. I don't know if I'll get a chance to go after a quail but we'll
see. DM
