Buck in Romania

I like the buche de Noel where you make a flourless chocolate cake in a jelly roll pan and roll it into a cylinder which is the center of the log. A textured chocolate icing forms the bark, and all the mushrooms and leaves made from different confections make the thing look like a scene from the forest floor.

The one I'm thinking of is not a jelly roll. Now I feel compelled to take a picture of the ones she makes (next month) both uncut and cut open. But yes, it looks like a scene from a forest floor. And a dusting of snow and a bit of ice for the season. One thing, it has a nice delicate flavor, not excessively sweet. We may be talking about the same kind of thing.

Yule Logs were made in my family as well. Its a European tradition and dates back to times where customs and tradition had real meaning. The Yule celebration was for many things but most important for a good harvest the following year. People would burn a Yule log in the fire place on the night of December 25( the last day of the Gremanic year) and into the next day. This represented lighting the way into the next and hopfully more prosperous year.

Wow, it looks good! I searched for yule log and I must say they look very good:). I'm all about keeping the traditions alive too! Makes us feel closer to our roots and the great people around:thumbup:

A cake made in a jelly roll pan does not have to be rolled up with jelly inside. The classic yule log uses a white cake which has been laced with liqueur. I prefer the chocolate, but liqueur is good.
